Customers of the Month
| Our September Customers of the Month are Prudy and Larry Klinger of Waterloo.
Favorite Hansen's product:
"Our favorite product is your wonderful milk. We both use it on cereal in the morning, my husband almost always has a glass with dinner, we cook with it, and of course, you can't have a peanut butter and jelly sandwich without a good glass of milk! It tastes like milk tasted when I was a child. No vitamin or chemical taste. And the 1% we drink looks like milk, not blue! My husband and I appreciate being able to get fresh, great-tasting milk locally. We travel often, and have drunk milk in many places, but NOWHERE does it taste as good as Hansen's! Your milk is simply the best! Other products we love are the cheese curds and yummy ice cream."
Why do you shop at Hansen's? "We shop at your Kimball Ridge store because it is about 4 blocks from our home. We were sorry when you had to discontinue selling at HyVee because of the one-stop convenience for us, but that did not deter us! We will go wherever you are selling." :-)
Thanks, Prudy and Larry!
Customers of the Month get a $5 gift certificate and a vehicle decal for being featured in our newsletter. |

Farm family milestone
Earlier this year, Hansen's Farm Fresh Dairy celebrated its 10th anniversary of on-farm milk processing. Another farming milestone was also reached this year: being designated a Heritage Farm, which means the farm has been owned and operated by the same family continuously for 150 years. The land was homesteaded in 1864, and 150 years later our family is still actively farming. Members of the seventh generation helped us accept the award at the Iowa State Fair in August.

Are full fat dairy products actually good for you?
The latest post to the Hansen blog:
"In the last few years I've heard some rumblings about fat being - gasp! - good for you. Specifically, animal fats like dairy. We've rounded up some research findings and medical evidence for why full-fat dairy products like butter and whole milk are actually better for you than their low-fat alternatives like margarine and skim milk."

Cows of the Month
The September Cows of the Month are Danae and Mauer. With great personalities and good looks, these two are fun to work with and a blast to have around. These heavy hitters are each pumping out about 150 pounds a milk a day and making it look easy. That's 35 gallons a day! That's why they are usually found at the feed alley as in these photos - they have to eat a lot to produce that much milk! ____________________________________________________

Cooking with Hansen's
This is one of my favorite salads. Just made it this weekend for the first time all summer and it was as good as ever. Loads of tomatoes and basil are making it onto the shelves at our stores now, too. Grab some while they last! Note: This salad is very juicy - and that's a good thing!
Marinated Tomato Salad
Ingredients - 1 cup canola or olive oil
- 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar
- 4 tablespoons sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 3 whole green onions, sliced thinly
- 18 (or so) whole basil leaves (chiffonade/julienned)
- 2 pounds assorted tomatoes, cut into chunks, or cut in half if using cherry tomatoes
Directions: Mix all ingredients except tomatoes in a large bowl. Add chopped tomatoes and stir to be sure that the tomatoes are completely covered. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours before serving, stirring every hour or so to be sure that the tomatoes at the top get down into the saucy goodness! Tip 1: To chiffonade the basil, stack the 18 leaves with the largest at the bottom. Roll the stack up and slice off thin pieces from the roll. The slices will become thin strips of basil Tip 2: This salad is even more delicious (and pretty) when you use a variety of types and colors of tomatoes. Mix cherry tomatoes, orange and yellow tomatoes, red tomatoes, or whatever you have on hand. |
