Leandro and Kay Avila
|
Our September Customer of the Month is Kay Avila of Cedar Falls, Iowa. Kay wrote us a very nice letter we'd like to share:
"I stopped in this morning to the outlet in Cedar Falls to buy some cream and cheese curds. I'm very excited about the Grass Run Farms ground beef! If you've carried it before, I missed it, but I'll definitely be buying my ground beef from Hansen's from now on. I hope this is a permanent new offering. "Also, the cashier told me this has been available for a while now, but I didn't realize I can use my credit card to pay or to load up my Hansen's card. This is so much more convenient for my household - fantastic. "And since I'm already on a roll about things I love about Hansen's, the local selection of honey, syrup, coffee, and produce is great! Hansen's provides an invaluable service to our community. I'm lucky I only live a few blocks away. Thank you for the great service and products!"
Thanks Kay!
Customers of the Month get a $5 gift certificate and a vehicle decal for being featured in our newsletter. |

Silos & Smokestacks' Bus Grant Program has expanded to include a broader array of agricultural experiences for Northeast Iowa students. In addition to helping cover the transportation costs of field trips to more than 100 SSNHA Partner Sites, the program is now open to a wider range of farm sites located within the 37-county Heritage Area. Educators may find a complete directory of SSNHA Partner Sites here and are encouraged to contact their local Farm Bureau for a list of farm sites open to tours. Remember, Hansen's Farm Fresh Dairy is open to school tours! Thanks to support from GROWMARK, Inc., a total of $10,000 will be available to Northeast Iowa schools during the 2013-2014 school year, with applications now being accepted. Since 2007, the program has helped over 12,000 youth learn about agriculture and where their food comes from.
Deadline: Until funds are depleted or December 1, 2013

Farm Crawl
Hansen's Farm Fresh Dairy will again be part of the UNI Local Food Program's Farm Crawl! Date: Sunday, Sept. 8, 2013 Time: 1 to 5 p.m. (Farm Crawl finale to follow)
The Farm Crawl is a self-guided tour of Cedar Valley farms, showcasing how local farmers grow your food.
Visitors to Hansen's Farm Fresh Dairy will begin at our Tour Center and receive a free cone of our premium ice cream. A light lunch, including pork sandwiches from local producer Carl Blake, will be available for purchase. The trolley will take visitors to the farm every 15 minutes. Attendees can take a self-guided tour of the cows, calves, the creamery, the wallabies and the milking parlor. New this year are our kangaroos! Hansen family members and employees will be stationed around the farm to answer questions. Milking time begins at 4 p.m. Children can pet a calf, ride a pedal tractor, get a dairy tattoo, milk a wooden cow and guess how much a hay bale weighs for a prize. Participants can also register for door prizes. All Hansen products will be available for sale and coupons will be available.
We're also part of the Farm Crawl finale: Wrap up your tour by visiting Hansen's Outlet in Cedar Falls or Moo Roo in Waterloo for locally produced food and treats.

Cow of the Month
The September Cow of the Month is Dabble, who is 5 years old and a mother of 2 heifers (Double and Dribble) and 2 bulls.
Dabble is one of the daughters of Dazzle, who we featured last month as our highest lifetime milk producer. Dabble is carrying on the tradition! After two years of milking, she is actually 14,000 pounds better than her mother at the same age. What a tremendous cow family to work with. They are trouble-free cows with longevity in their blood. They produce quality offspring and a LOT of quality milk!

Cooking with Hansen's
This month's recipe comes from the Betty Crocker website. It's a delicious apple crumble, and one of those great short-cut recipes that's super easy!
Southern Apple Crumble
Filling
3 large apples, peeled, coarsely chopped (about 3 cups)
1/2 cup sugar
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
1 to 2 tsp cinnamon
1/4 cup cold Hansen's butter, cut into small pieces
Topping
1 pouch oatmeal cookie mix
1/2 cup melted butter
1/2 cup chopped pecans
Directions:Heat oven to 300°F. Spray bottom and sides of 8-inch square (2-quart) glass baking dish with cooking spray. In large bowl, toss filling ingredients. Spread mixture in baking dish. In same large bowl, stir cookie mix and melted butter until crumbly. Sprinkle over filling. Bake 40 minutes. Remove from oven; sprinkle with pecans. Bake 15 to 20 minutes longer or until topping is golden brown. Serve warm or at room temperature. Top with fresh Hansen's whipped cream!
