| Have you read our blog? We publish stories about the cows, our products, family life on the farm and health issues. Here's one of our favorites from June:
Sustainability at Hansen's Dairy
Dairy farmers work diligently to uphold their legacy as good environmental stewards, and the Hansens are no different. Taking care of the land makes healthy cows, and healthy cows produce high quality milk. Most importantly, sustainability makes the world healthier for future generations. Here at Hansen's Dairy, we implement many sustainability practices to help keep the planet healthy.

New local products in our stores
We are always on the lookout for new local products to share with you through our retail stores. This month, we are very excited to bring you products from three new vendors. If you have suggestions or comments, please let us know! First up, we have produce from A Family Market Place in Waterloo. Chad Thomas is a local farmer who grows a wide variety of produce at his farm on East Shaulis Road near the Isle Casino Hotel. Our selection will depend on what's in season, but we currently have tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, kohlrabi, table onions, and summer squash. Next up, baked goods from Vicky Dunn of C'est La V Bakery. We are featuring her products at Moo Roo in Waterloo. We'd love to hear from you about what you enjoy and what you would like to see more of. Vicky's bread and croissants are amazing, not to mention her pizza dough...pretty much anything that comes out of her kitchen! And, last but not least, we have new local maple syrup in the stores for you. Dan Potter, of Great River Maple in Garnavillo, makes maple syrup on his family's century farm. We are carrying his syrup - both Grade A and Grade B. Never heard of Grade B? It's much harder to find, but soooo delicious. A bit darker than Grade A, with a deeper maple flavor. We are big fans of Great River Maple! |
Hansen products served at Isle
Did you know our products are served at the Isle Casino Hotel in Waterloo? The restaurant there known as The Buffet is making the transformation to Farmer's Pick Buffet and offering more on the menu from local growers. Read more....

Cow of the Month
|
Notice Disa's black right front leg as she licks her newborn bull calf.
|
The July Cow of the Month is Disa, named after the wife of our Outlet store manager, Eric Cornish.
Disa is a fine-looking cow. She just had a bull calf on May 8, so she hasn't been milking long, but she is averaging 80 pounds per day (10 gallons).
She has a unique characteristic in that her right front leg is all black (most Holsteins have white legs), so she is easy to spot in the milking parlor.
Disa the cow is a great addition to our herd, and Disa Cornish and her husband are a great addition to our business. Disa helps with our marketing and also makes the yummy oatmeal chocolate chip cookies for our ice cream sandwiches. Eric and Disa have done wonderful things for our sales and for our community relations. They have become great friends of ours and it's nice to have them as part of the Hansen Dairy team.

Cooking with Hansen's
These mini strawberry cheesecakes are a refreshing sweet treat - perfect for those last Bagge strawberries of the season! You can buy the cream cheese at our stores, too.
Filled Strawberries Ingredients: 1 quart strawberries 6 oz room-temperature cream cheese 1/2 tsp vanilla extract 1 1/2 tbsp powdered sugar Toasted almonds (optional)
Directions: Trim stems off strawberries, then use a melon baller to scoop out tops. Trim small amount from bottom so strawberry will stand up.
Whip cream cheese, vanilla and powdered sugar on medium speed until slightly fluffy, 2 to 3 minutes. Fill pastry bag fitted with 1/2" star tip with cream cheese mixture; pipe into berries until it brims over tops. Top with toasted almonds.
