Blake Hansen: Cattle Ob-Gyn
About 200 calves are born each year at Hansen's Dairy, and Herd Manager Blake Hansen serves as a type of cattle ob-gyn for the expecting cows. While difficulties during labor are uncommon, difficult labors are very hard on the cows and can lead to diminished milking productivity and decreased fertility. For these reasons, Blake keeps a close eye on the cows near the end of their 9-month pregnancy. Read more...

Meet our employees!
This month we want to introduce you to our new intern, whose position is made possible with funding from Silos and Smokestacks National Heritage Area. Kelby will be helping out with tours and farm marketing this summer.
Name: Kelby Robb
Hometown: Vinton, Iowa
Family/Background: My family is very close, and we enjoy working together on our family's 110-acre Century Farm outside Vinton. The farm has been in our family since 1891. We have a small beef production operation raising Angus/Shorthorn cattle, but often have many other animals on the farm including sheep, pigs, horses and even the occasional llama or flock of ducks - it's almost like Old McDonald's Farm!
Education: I am a senior at the University of Northern Iowa and will graduate in December with a Bachelor's degree in Public Relations and minors in Journalism and Marketing. Upon graduating, I would like to be involved with sports or the agriculture industry.
Most excited about this summer: I am very excited to have the opportunity to educate guests about agriculture in Iowa and the importance of supporting our farmers.
Favorite Ice cream flavor: Raspberry

Coming soon: C'est La V baked goods!
We are excited to announce that Moo Roo will soon be selling baked goods from C'est La V Bakery.
Owner Vicky Dunn of Waterloo worked at her family's cheese factory in Wisconsin for 20 years before attending the French Pastry School in Chicago in 2010. She moved to Waterloo in October 2011 and now makes delicious sourdough breads, croissants, pastries and cookies out of her home. She uses products found at our stores, including Hansen's milk and butter and Tim Laughlin's honey. Look for her baked goods at Moo Roo beginning July 1!
To find out more about Vicky and C'est La V Bakery, check out her Facebook page and a recent article in the Courier about Vicky using spent grains from a beer brewery.

Calf of the Month
We couldn't resist highlighting our little preemie calf, Eyelash, as June Cow of the Month. On May 20, two calves were born on the farm: a Red & White Holstein bull on his due date (right) and a Black & White Holstein heifer 46 days early (left). That's right, almost 7 weeks early! Cows have the same gestation as humans (9 months) so it is quite significant that she survived and is now thriving. She weighed about 47 pounds at birth, whereas full-term calves weigh 80-100 pounds, as you can tell from the differences in these two calves. The irony? Her mother's name is Enormous (whom we have also previously featured as Cow of the Month). Eyelash has made quite a smash on Facebook. As a result of many people sharing the photo, 5,886 people were reached. A normal Hansen's post usually reaches between 500 and 1,000 people. | Eyelash is just the right size to hang out with the Hansen grandkids. |

Cooking with Hansen's
And this month, another fantastic holiday: Father's Day! We've put together a couple of easy recipes for a complete dinner. It involves lots of grilling and even dessert. Remember to use the coupon on our web site for the meat!
My Dad's Favorite BBQ Sauce This would be delicious slathered on pretty much any meat that you want to grill. Try it on steaks, burgers, or chicken from our stores.
Ingredients: 1 medium onion, chopped (about 1/2 cup) 1/2 cup molasses 1/2 cup catsup 2 tsp orange peel finely shredded 1/3 cup orange juice (preferably fresh squeezed) 2 Tbs olive oil 1 Tbs vinegar 1 Tbs steak sauce 1/2 tsp prepared mustard 1/2 tsp Worcestershire sauce 1/4 tsp each: garlic powder, salt, cayenne pepper, hot sauce 1/8 tsp ground cloves 1/4 cup bourbon (totally optional, but so tasty...could use apple juice instead, or just skip this step) Directions: Combine all ingredients, except bourbon, and cook over low heat for 30 minutes or until onions are transparent. Add bourbon or juice, if using, and simmer for 10 more minutes. Use as barbecue sauce.
Grilled Veggies (with cheese!) Ingredients: 1. Any combination of your favorite veggies, sliced in rounds as big as you can. Zucchini or summer squash sliced into diagonal coins, eggplant, sliced tomato, sweet potato, even apples. You could also use corn on the cob, but cut the cobs into thirds for grilling. 2. Cheese, especially sharp Cheddar, sliced fairly thin.
Directions: Brush the veggie slices with a bit of olive oil on both sides. Place slices directly on the grill over medium-low heat. Check occasionally and flip when nice and browned. Place a slice of cheese on some of the veggie slices and let it melt while the other side cooks. Serve veggies with and without cheese as a side dish.
Roasted Strawberries (with ice cream!) Ingredients: 4 cups strawberries 1 tsp sugar Hansen's vanilla ice cream Optional: Extras for garnish...oreos, marshmallows, chocolate chips, mint leaves, etc. Directions: Preheat oven to 350. Hull and halve strawberries and toss with sugar. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper. Roast the strawberries for 20 minutes. Transfer strawberries and juices to a bowl and cool a bit. Serve over ice cream with whichever garnish you choose. |
