Our April Customer of the Month is Charles Hays of Confidence, Iowa!
Favorite Hansen's product: "I love all chocolate milk but I love yours the most! Also, ICE CREAM!"

Yes you do! Thanks, Charles!

Cash Cow
|
There were no big CA$H COW winners in March, so in April, we will mark 4 jugs with $100 (look inside the jug at your label when it's empty). Since we mark them at the beginning of the month, your best chance to find a large prize is in the next few days!
Remember, there are still 10 jugs EVERY WEEK marked with a $5.00 prize. View details here on our website.
There were two $5 winners this month: Linda Crisman and Leticia Chabotte.

Cow of the Month
|
The April Cow of the Month is
Blizzard. She was born Dec. 9, 2009, and is in her second lactation. That means she has given birth twice.
This girl is a milker! Today, Blizzard is three weeks into her second lactation and already is producing 136 pounds a day (that's almost 16 gallons!).
In her first year of milking, she produced 31,492 pounds, which is way above average for a first-timer. Though she is put together very well, cows like Blizzard tend to not live as long because they produce so much that their bodies wear out faster.
"For us, ideal production for a first-lactation cow is 24,000 pounds. These are the ones that stick around," says herd manager Blake Hansen. "Maybe she will be the one to prove me wrong!"

Site of the Year voting There is still time to vote for Hansen's Farm Fresh Dairy as People's Choice Site of the Year through the Silos & Smokestacks contest. Hansen's was one of 11 nominees, and are now one of the top 3 finalists (other sites are Wapsipinicon Mill Museum in Independence and Motor Mill Historic Site in Elkader). Click here to watch video of Hansen's on KFXA 28 in Cedar Rapids.
Voting goes though Tuesday, April 2, and the winner will be announced at the Golden Silos Awards Luncheon April 3. Click here to vote - it's as simple as entering your name and e-mail address (only one vote per e-mail). We thank you for your support!

CSA = Community Supported Agriculture Why a CSA for vegetables? Know your farmer, know your food! In the farm share subscription model, CSA members buy a share of the farming operation which entitles them to a variety of produce every week during the growing season. The customer receives freshly picked, locally-grown food and know who grew the food and how it has been handled. CSAs provide information on how the farm operates and are given the opportunity to reconnect with the land and their food sources. You can sign up for a CSA share at the Hansen's stores. We have information available for three CSAs in the area:
Genuine Faux Farm, located in Tripoli, has a few remaining slots for the 2013 CSA season. They have more slots available in Waverly, though, than in Cedar Falls. Contact them soon to reserve your slot. gff@genuinefauxfarm.com
Bloomin' Wooley Acres is a commercial garden and associated growers network. In addition to produce, they include bread and other local products.
Annie's Gardens and Greens grows heirloom vegetables in Fort Atkinson, Iowa. They are looking forward to planting more fruit trees and bushes in addition to the vegetables. |

Cooking with Hansen's
With spring already here (supposedly), I'm craving brunch...asparagus quiche, berry streusel coffee cakes, muffins, fruit salads, you name it. So, we've put together a round-up of some fantastic websites for delicious brunch recipes. Look no further than these great recipes for your next weekend brunch, weekday breakfast, or anytime in between.
First off, brunch has its own Wikipedia page. That's cool.
Midwest Living put together an amazing list of about 40 different recipes, all of which look great. I'm most excited about the fruit and herb crepes. This Cool Rhuby Cordial from the Food Network looks fantastic...you can always substitute vanilla extract. Lemon Ricotta Biscuits? Yes please! Get the ricotta at our stores - it's so good! Ham is always a nice brunch centerpiece. Here are five easy ham glaze recipes from Betty Crocker. This coffee cake from the Pioneer Woman is always a hit. So is this one from Lord Stocking's Bed and Breakfast in Mendota, Illinois. Never been there, but man, this is a good coffee cake. Going super fancy with brunch? There are actual rules about place settings! And, if you want some ideas about how it should all look...these ideas from HGTV look fun. |
