President's Message

presidentGreetings!

I am extremely excited to announce that we have a new member of the AARV Board of Directors: Dr. Megan Ridley is the new (first official) Communications Director! Dr. Ridley has a lot planned to get the AARV up to speed with our social media and on-line presence - these initiatives will provide additional resources for our members and also promote physical rehabilitation and the AARV to the public. I would like to turn the rest of this column over to Dr. Ridley so that she can introduce herself and outline the exciting projects she is working on. Welcome, Dr. Ridley!

Dr. Megan Ridley Communications Director's Message

communicationsGreetings from AARV's new Communications Director:

Hello, fellow AARVers! I'm very excited to start my duties as AARV's Communications Director, and I hope to be able to keep up the amazing work that the members of the Board of Directors have already accomplished. My primary goal is to promote the field of veterinary rehabilitation to colleagues and the public. Specifically, I would like to expand AARV's social media presence to reach out not only to fellow rehabbers and the veterinary community, but to the public as well.

I also plan on helping to make the AARV website a go-to resource by keeping the rehab community up to date on research in animal rehabilitation, on the development of new therapies and on current events, including conferences and continuing education courses. I also aim to keep current AARV members involved and interested in their quickly growing field and I would like the AARV website to attract even more people who are interested in animal rehabilitation.

Providing AARV (info@rehabvets.org) with photos from your clinics, updates about animal rehab events and anything else pertinent to the world of animal rehabilitation will greatly help achieve these goals.

Megan Ridley, DVM, CVA, CCRT, CVSMT

TECHNICIAN CORNER
Military and Working Dogs Benefit From Attention to Soft Tissues

technicianby Kristen L. Hagler, BS (An.Phys), RVT, CCRP, CVPP, OACM, CBW
AARV Technician Liaison

As credentialed veterinary technicians, we often have the opportunity to have more hands-on contact with our patients, performing normal health care tasks, than many of our other colleagues. A simple, but highly specialized way can be through the integration of massage therapy into a physical rehabilitation or even a general medicine practice model. There are many credentialing programs available for the veterinary technician to attend and learn more about massage therapy benefits and techniques.

This month, we are pleased to feature an informative article profiling Kelley Meyer, AAS, LVT, LATG, CCRP, published in Massage magazine in June. Kelley highlights how military and working dogs need the same, if not more, attention to their soft tissues.

Our thanks to Massage magazine for granting permission to reprint this article.

"Massage & Rehab Provide Comfort to U.S. Military Dogs"

When Buco arrived at the Military Working Dog Veterinary Hospital at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland in Lackland, Texas, the Belgian Malinois, who had worked as an explosives-detection dog, was in rough shape. He had suffered a fibrocartilaginous embolism, which is much like a stroke in the spinal column, leaving him nonambulatory and unable to defecate and urinate on his own. But after a year of rehabilitation, all systems were go, thanks to the dedication and hard work of hospital staff.

A worldwide referral hospital for military working dogs, the Role IV Veterinary Hospital at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland has medical and surgical capabilities and also provides rehabilitation services. The hospital routinely sees more than 100 patients a day; the physical therapy and rehab section treats up to 20 dogs at any given time, most post-surgery and some undergoing rehab prior to retirement.

In 2013, Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland became the site of the first national monument dedicated to U.S. military working dog teams, and features the U.S. military's four prominent working dog breeds since World War II: Doberman pinscher, German shepherd, Labrador retriever and Belgian Malinois.

Certified canine rehabilitation practitioner and licensed veterinary technician Kelley Meyer, L.A.T.G., works to restore health to working dogs and prepares those about to retire for adoption.

About Kelley
Kelley grew up in West Virginia and graduated in 1988 from the Veterinary Technology Program at Fairmont State College in Fairmont, West Virginia. She moved to San Antonio, Texas in the fall of 1988 and worked in private practice for about 2 years. She then worked at the UT Health Science Center in San Antonio in Lab Animal Resources for 5 years. Following that she began working at the Military Working Dog Hospital and has continued there for almost 20 years. She has worked in all the clinics, including radiology, internal medicine, laboratory, and surgery, and for the past 11 years has been working exclusively in rehabilitation. Kelley says, "Working with these 4-legged soldiers is a true pleasure - they inspire me every day."
