SENATE PASSES BILL TO REAUTHORIZE ESEA
We are happy to report that last evening The Senate passed The Every Child Achieves Act (S. 1177), which reauthorizes the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) and replaces the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB). The final vote was resoundingly in favor of improving our national education policies. Once again, we want to thank everyone who circulated and responded to our CE News Action Alert.
As you know, following the passage of NCLB, there has been significant erosion of the equitable share of services and benefits to which our schools are entitled and that Congress intended. S. 1177 (similar to HR 5-the recently passed House version of ESEA reauthorization) includes provisions that correct those inequities and greatly improves the conditions related to services for students and teachers in private schools.
Look out for upcoming editions of CE News for further developments as Congress proceeds to conference on two bills. Please continue to pray for the members of Congress, their staffs, and the process.
You can see the USCCB press release on the progress here.
