The Foundation
At the Classic Swing Golf School we take pride in paying close attention to the fundamentals in golf. We remain focused on these fundamentals, as many of you have heard me say, with the assistance of the acronym G.A.P.B.S. (Grip, Aim, Posture, Ball Position, Stance Width). As one of these major fundamentals, Posture also plays an important role in helping us deliver POWER, which continues to be the topic of this year's newsletter campaign. From January through April, we have addressed drills, stretches and/or strengthening exercises to help improve power. This month we take a look at posture.

"You can destroy a good swing with poor posture and help a bad swing with good posture."
~Jack Nicholas

Posture refers to the angles created by your body when you address the ball. The following is a list of good posture angles and measurements for a right-handed golfer.  From sand wedge to driver these numbers could change some, but not much.
Picture 1

  • Keep your back as straight as you can by pinning your shoulder blades back; tilt your spine forward from the hips 35-45 degrees.  (Picture 1)
  • Weight distribution is toward the balls of your feet, slightly outside the arches at 50-55%.

  • Weight distribution in a lateral direction always places a little more weight forward on the left foot at address (50-55%) while the right is shoulder lower. (See April's Step In Drill for more on a major key for power, weight transfer!)
  • Stance width will vary, but for POWER, error wider. So for the driver align the inside of heels with the outside of the shoulders.
Picture 2

  • The spine tilts in two directions: Forward as mentioned above and then slightly away from the target with the right shoulder lower than the left at address. (Picture 2)
  • Make sure the hip sockets are aligned over the ankle joints, and only a slight knee flex is needed

Picture 3

  • By pointing the grip end directly toward your belt buckle and having 4 to 6 inches from the handle to your body, your arms will hang freely and straight down. (Picture 3)
  • It is easier to rotate around a straight post than curved post. In other words, keep a neutral neck in alignment with your spine. Chin up - eyes down.
