Candy's Corner
Every once in a while you meet people who you won't forget.
On Valentine's day, my friend, Widou, and I went to Lincoln Road for lunch.
Lincoln Road was full of fast walking groups of people celebrating love and heart's day. We arrived at the restaurant, sat down and ordered our lunch.
Four young men from Chicago were at the next table. It took me two minutes to take up conversation with them. As we enjoyed our lunch, we were laughing, sharing, and adoring these very nice young men. After a while we said goodbye and they walked away, only to return a few minutes later with two big beautiful bunches of long-stemmed pink roses.
How special is that? I am only sorry I did not take their information so I could say "thank you" to all of them.
Yes, Spencer, I gave them my card. Maybe they will contact me. I will let you know! |

I was sitting comfortably in my office when I got a call that a bill was being sponsored in Tallahassee that would grant ER doctors and nurses sovereign immunity.
I have represented a lot of people who have had their lives destroyed by busy and careless Emergency Room staff. If this law passes, ER workers would be insulated from liability for mistakes they make, as though they were employed by the State. We tax payers would be on the hook for any liability payments made due to ER mistakes.
I could not let this bill turn into a law without a fight. But how?
Look, I am a lawyer, and I am supposed to know this stuff. But, until you see the actual process, it can be quite a surprise and a little disappointing.
I was honored to be accompanied by my clients, Gonzalo Miranda, Manny Caballero and my son, Nory. I urge you to take a look at our Video Blog, and more importantly, to get involved in the process BEFORE a law gets passed that may have an adverse effect on your life.
As future bills come up, I will let you know. If you would like to join me on a journey for justice, let me know.
With love,

Lawyers to the Rescue hosted its second event in March. A fund raiser and silent auction for La Cruz Roja Chilena (The Chilean Red Cross) to assist victims of the recent earthquakes.
The event took place at a Miami Chilean restaurant and was attended by both lawyers and non-lawyers. There was plenty of food, dancing and fun, all in the name of supporting those who needed us the most.
A special thanks to my wife, Dina, who worked tirelessly to put the event together and to all who came.

In the Midst of the National Healthcare Debate
The Florida Republican Party chairman, State Sen. John Thrasher, is pushing an absurd piece of legislation that would make all emergency room health care providers - nurses, doctors and even paramedics - "agents of the state."
So if a doctor at a private hospital makes a reckless mistake, the tax payers would pay the claim, subject to the current sovereign immunity cap of $100,000. To recover more, victims would need to file a claims bill in the Legislature, a process that can take years and hardly ever works.
My clients joined me in Tallahasse to fight this by attending a press conference and going before the Senate Insurance and Banking Committee. For whatever reason, Mr. Thrasher showed up for the hearing to mysteriously never return and the debate was shelved at least for the time being. Read the bill here. |
