Career Placement Success
Career Placement Success at Guidance Aviation

First Semester 2012 has been bittersweet as
we begin to say goodbye to some Guidance Aviation Graduates and Instructor Pilots who begin their careers "on the outside".

Kenan Bahadir was recently hired by Maverick Helicopters, and although he'll stay on awhile for stage checks, we know we will be seeing less of him as time goes on. Congrats Kenan, you deserve it!

We also are saying goodbye and Congratulations to Cody Cooper who was just hired by Papillon!

The Advanced Safety Management System course dived into the 4 components and 12 elements in a step-by-step process for implementation.  This course also dissected the root causes of accidents in the helicopter industry and Procedural (intentional) Non-Compliance concerns.

The courses are critical in the success of the
Guidance Aviation Safety Management System.
Matt Cavenaugh  and Chris Horton have worked closely in the last six months to create the Safety Management System specific to the Guidance Aviation operations.  This SMS encompasses the entire organization and creates an open environment for students and employees to voice their safety and hazard concerns.

Through the show, Chris Horton was asked to assist ARGUS in working with HAI to complete the mission specific standards and protocols for flight training. ARGUS is playing a critical role in the Helicopter Association International IS-BAO and accreditation processes.  Additionally, Chris Horton will be seeking a position on the HAI Safety Committee.

Turbine R66 Sales Boom as Turbine Transition Enrollment Grows
Turbine Transition Training, R66 at Guidance Aviation

December 2011 marked the 100th Robinson R66 Turbine Helicopter to roll off the factory floor in Torrance, California.  And, according to Robinson, "To date, the company has received over 380 R66 orders; more than 70% of those orders are from foreign countries. Foreign sales have consistently accounted for more than 60% of the company's overall aircraft sales. R66 S/N 0100 was delivered to National Airways Corp. (NAC), Robinson's longtime dealer in South Africa."

There's more good news.  The high quality R66 Turbine is also driving good business in the U.S. Guidance Aviation's Turbine Transition Training program in Prescott, AZ. utilizes the Robinson R66 (pictured right) and the program has seen a growth of 450% since its introduction last semester.  The students are enjoying the increased reserve power and improved altitude performance of the R66 Turbine as compared to the popular R44.  And, the improved altitude performance is key for facilities like Guidance which provide high altitude helicopter flight training in the mountainous terrain of Prescott.  Guidance Aviation maintains a fleet of 13 Robinson Helicopters and is a Robinson Certified Maintenance facility. Guidance also has a growing fleet of airplanes including Cirrus and PiperSport.

Spring 2012 Brings More SAR's

As mentioned in the Winter 2011 Newsletter, we were involved in a number of SAR (Search and Rescues).  This Spring has been no different.

This past January,  Guidance Aviation Instructor Pilots Shannon Bowman (PIC) and Ben Lewis (Spotter) took off at approximately 0900 on Thursday, January 12, 2011 to search for a man who was low on fuel and lost while driving through mountainous terrain.  Heading south just west of Black Canyon City to the GPS coordinates that were provided to the Guidance Pilots by YCSO, the Guidance crew made contact with Sheriff Tom Frank (Frank51) and quickly located the jeep and driver.  The Guidance crew then began searching for a trail that the jeep could use to exit the area.  READ MORE HERE

On February 29, 2012, Hunter French, a Designated Pilot Examiner and Chief Pilot for Guidance Aviation AND a Department of Public Safety (DPS) Air Rescue Pilot, made a dramatic rescue yesterday after a boulder rolled off a mountainside and struck five teenagers as they were hiking in the White Tank mountains.

French hovered the helicopter on the side of the mountain to pick up the teenagers who could walk.  The teenager in critical condition was long lined off the side of the mountain in a stretcher to ambulances waiting below.     READ MORE HERE

Although Guidance was not involved in this SAR, we are especially proud of the DPS pilot, Hunter French, a Designated Pilot Examiner and Chief Pilot of Guidance Aviation. You got some "mad skills" Hunter, way to go!  And, special thanks again to all DPS crews for the risks they take and the work they do! Great job.  Check out the DPS Aviation Bureau HERE.
