Using CultureCount Data for Cultural Planning

NEFA created CultureCount to help New England states, cities, and towns with cultural assessment and planning efforts. A few recent examples:

  • As Stephanie Fortunato discussed at the 2011 Creative Communities Exchange, the City of Providence, RI, received a Sustainable Communities Regional Planning Grant from the federal government to plan cultural corridors along six transit routes. Fortunato used CultureCount data to map the city's cultural assets for the next stage of the corridor planning.
  • Massachusetts Creative Economy Industry Director Helena Fruscio and the Creative Economy Council leveraged research data to meet with over 500 businesses, organizations, and individuals to discuss the growth and sustainability of the creative economy sector and its future in Massachusetts. From press release: "Twenty-one CreativeNEXT events and roundtables are planned for July and August to connect to the $1 billion creative economy industry, which currently employs over 100,000 Massachusetts workers, according to a New England Foundation for the Arts study."
  • Creative Haverhill built upon a CreativeNEXT event hosted in Haverhill, MA by gathering local stakeholders for community forums: "CultureCount data helped me bring town stakeholders together; I targeted key artists and creative enterprises to convene. These networking events are a need for the city," stated Creative Haverhill Director, David Zoffoli. "I find CultureCount useful from a 40,000 foot view. It is well researched and documented and provides the un-initiated with an historical view of where we have been and the challenges we may face moving forward."
