NEA Research Report on U.S. Artists and Art Workers

The National Endowment for the Arts published Research Note #105 last month, updating earlier analysis of the country's artist workforce. Their report analyzes the same artist occupations as in NEFA's research on the strength of New England's creativity economy and once again demonstrates this region's leadership across the country.

New England highlights:

  • Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island all surpass the U.S. level of artists in the workforce.
  • Vermont is the U.S. state with the highest concentration of workers in the graphic design industry. Writers and authors are also prominent in Vermont.
  • Massachusetts is one of the states with high employment concentrations in book publishing.
  • Maine has a relatively high concentration of fine artists, art directors, and animators.

The survey is especially designed to gather financial data from those

NEFA in the Community

NEFA staff have been busy meeting with folks around the region this fall. A few places we have been:

  • Southern New England American Planning Association Conference in Providence, RI - Montachusett Regional Planning Commission presented on cultural planning and how they used CultureCount to identify a robust list of local cultural assets.
  • Juice Conference in Camden, ME - NEFA staff connected with economic development leaders to hear about their activities developing Midcoast Maine as a regional creative economy hub and NEFA's Executive Director, Rebecca Blunk joined a panel on international cultural exchange.
  • Creative Economy Association of the North Shore Fall Event in Beverly, MA - Research Manager, Dee Schneidman, presented on NEFA's 2011 report New England's Creative Economy: Nonprofit Sector Impact. Massachusetts Creative Industries Director, Helena Fruscio also spoke at the event, which took place at Montserrat College of Art.
  • Arts Presenters of Northern New England in Hanover, NH - NEFA learned more about issues nonprofit performing arts organizations face when hiring artists from abroad
  • Windham County meeting in Brattleboro, VT -  NEFA met with community leaders and artists to discuss how local cultural councils can use CultureCount as a directory tool within their region.
