PADI RESCUE COURSE
31 MAY
Ceri is a Scubaversity Customer who recently completed his Rescue course, I love that he is able to explain why it is so important to do your Rescue Course, please take the time to read his article and book yourself on this course soon!
"Having completed my open water scuba course a number of years ago, and then my advanced late last year, I made the decision to further my diving career by moving onto Master scuba diver. Now in order to do this, one has to first complete the Rescue diver course, and part of that step is to complete EFR (emergency first response)
This is an attempt to highlight to you, how this has not only changed my diving but by life in general..." Read More by Ceri James

Things Instructors say "Welcome to the foodchain folks, you're no longer on top!" "I'm sorry, but no matter what the store owner said I'm not going to carry all your gear around for you" "I see, you just forgot to mention the epilepsy" "Yes, I know you were scared, but don't ever bite me again!" "What do you mean you always bleed like that?" "You don't want to do the buddy breathing because you have what!?" "No, this isn't all I do for a living!" "Yes, this is what I do for a living...why?"
| Some of these are really funny, the super cool dude coming out the cave & the Free diver falling of the boat took the cake! |

DIVE COMPUTER REVIEW
Mares Meridian by Wynand Roos
It was with great excitement that I replaced my 11 year old ScubaPro Alidin Prime dive computer with the new Mares Matrix!
This was done not as a "must replace" but rather "would love to replace"

After doing a couple of dives with the new Matrix, I thought I'd share some of my opinions:
As a dive computer, I have never had so much relevant information at hand on a dive. The screen is very easy to read and the menus are very easy to navigate. Some of my favourite features include the build in compass as well as the automatic, multilevel safety stop countdowns (especially the fact that it continues your countdown on a safety stop after you accidently dropped below 6m and corrected) After a dive the Matrix is also very useful as a debriefing tool, with detailed dive information easily accessible - including a Graphical chart of your multilevel dive.
There are however also quite a few things that irritate me about the new Matrix:
As a tool that needs to ensure that you wake up in time for your dive, I found that the Alarm can hardly be heard by a mouse, never mind a human being. As I mentioned above, the compass is awesome but I could not set a bearing before my dive, as this function is only available once you descend. This does not help much if you are trying to get back to an entry point under water. I also can't say that I particularly like the feel of the buttons, they are inconsistent with the first push into a menu creating a click but subsequently have a soft feel. My biggest frustration with the Matrix is the Battery life, 3.5 days and 4 dives after my first charge the battery was flat. This would normally not be the greatest problem if you have power available all the time, but as you know sometimes you dives are in remote locations with limited or shared access to power. What I despise most about the battery life is the fact that if you don't charge the Matrix in time it will lose your Date and Time configuration - This sucks big-time!
All in all I am quite happy with my purchase and look forward to many more successful dives with my new Matrix. I would rate it: 3/5

It's kind of like evolution, first we get costumes, then we get a wetsuit, then we learn to pee in our wetsuits and then finally we get a Dry Suit. However there is some skill involved which is why you do the Speciality.
