Greetings!
Happy 2011!!! We hope all of you have had a great start to the New Year. Our alumni database continues to grow and we are thrilled to be able to keep you connected to our Hillsborough Schools. We have over 700 alumni currently connected and our goal this year is to expand this list to over 1000 alumni. With your help, we can make this happen. Just continue to forward this newsletter to fellow Crocker alumni. It's that simple! Also, in another proud Hillsborough moment, our Hillsborough School District continues to be in the top 1% of School Districts in the State of California, according to the 2010 API Scores. Congratulations to our administrators, teachers, students, parents and community for helping our children succeed year after year! CITIZENS OF THE YEAR AND COMMUNITY CARE RECIPIENTS: The Associated Parent Group is happy to announce this year's recipients of the Citizens of the Year and Community Care Award. Willy Murphy will be awarded the Community Care Award on March 5 (Opening Day of Hillsborough Little League) and Linda and Michael Fitzpatrick will be awarded the Citizens of the Year award later this year. Congratulations to all three of these winners and our thanks to the many parents, alumni and community members for submitting so many deserving nominations. CROCKER PRINCIPAL ANNOUNCES HER RETIREMENT Our wonderful Crocker Principal for the past sixteen years, Mrs. Janet Chun, announced her retirement effective this Fall. The following is a letter she sent to current students and parents.
"After much contemplation, I have decided to pursue retirement at the end of this academic year. This has not been an easy decision for me to make because I truly love Crocker, the staff, and the students. I came to Crocker 16 years ago to teach. I never dreamed that I would one day be the Assistant Principal for four years and then the Principal for 10 years. I am still flattered and grateful that former Superintendent Marilyn Miller and former Principal Larry Raffo saw a potential in me that even I had not seen. I can honestly say that I have given Crocker my full attention for the 16 years that I have been here and I believe that many wonderful things have happened under my watch.
It has been particularly gratifying to have raised awareness about how critical these middle school years are for our children's social and emotional development. The renovation and building of new spaces has been a long but exciting process. The gradual but deliberate implementation of technology into the curriculum has been both innovative and necessary for our 21st Century learners. Expanding our elective choices and supporting the growing enthusiasm for the fine arts broadens the richness of a middle school experience that many public schools can no longer offer. The diversification of the faculty to better reflect our student population has fostered a connectedness in the relationship between students and teachers. We have had much to celebrate together as a result of our hard work , partnership, and shared leadership. As a result, we have been rewarded with two National Blue Ribbon Awards, four California Distinguished Schools Awards, and seven Kent Awards. Crocker is in a very good place and time for new leadership. Because I still have a vision for the future of the school, it is difficult to walk away. But I believe that a good leader needs to know when that time has come.
I have been asked to assist Crocker in the transition through the summer and fall and am happy to do so in any way that is appropriate. In my retirement, I look forward to being Mr. Chun's helper and a more consistent presence in my aging parents' lives. I plan to make some lifestyle changes to address some health concerns while I am still young enough to do so.
It has been a privilege and a pleasure to have served the students and parents of Hillsborough and to have been a colleague with the most extraordinary and loving Crocker staff. I will savor each day that I have left as Principal, but know in my heart that my relationship with Crocker and the community has not ended. Thank you for all of your support.
Sincerely, Janet Chun
We wish Janet all the best in her retirement and we all will truly miss her. The search for a new Crocker prinicipal will begin in March.

ALUMNI PROFILE
Esther Emergui Gillette Hosting a Crocker Reunion
Esther Emergui Gillette went to Crocker from 1979 - 1982 (class of 1982). We recently sat down with Esther and asked her a few questions about her days at Crocker and how she's stayed connected with her friends. "Though some of my Crocker friends no longer live in the area, many do and it is nice to keep in touch as now many of us have kids in that age group. We not only reminisce, but remember how important those formative years are to a young person. We have the capacity to make life-long friends during this time of growth."
What motivates you to stay in touch with your Crocker Classmates? "It has been nice to be in touch (love Facebook!) with old classmates to see what they are doing now and how much we have all changed and developed - personally and professionally. Our class was fortunate to have some amazing people who are now doing incredible things."
I heard you planned a reunion. When was it and was it hard to get in touch with friends? "We had our Crocker reunion several years ago, but we are approaching our collective 25th anniversary from high school, so those reunions are right around the corner. It's hard to believe how fast the time has flown. When Cathy Lin Smith and I started planning our Crocker reunion back in 2002, we thought it would be nice for everyone to get together, as not all of us went to high school together. It was pre-Facebook and more difficult to locate people than it is now. Facebook has been an amazingly successful tool to find old classmates, and for any reunion planners, I highly recommend it. With an old yearbook and your Facebook account, you could be set."
Our thanks to Esther for giving us her insight into planning a Crocker Reunion. If you or your friends would like to host a Crocker Reunion, please let us know. You can reach us at alumni@hsf.org. Also, don't forget to join our Crocker Facebook. Make sure to register as an alum on our Crocker Alumni page at alumni.hsf.org
