News from Our Friends | In L.A. & Around the World
Doris
Bittar writes us with warmest regards...
I am engaged in my first true collaborative art experience called "Tec
Tang Tarab." It is a three-part installation that combines, and
morphs Aztec, Tang Dynasty (Chinese) and Arab/Indo-European cultures.
Each installation explores music, words and patterns. Poet, Diane Gage
and microtonal musician and instrument maker Jonathan Glasier have develop my
initial idea into a serious reevaluation of our heterogeneous culture.
These installations may be seen as templates or filters for any culture bumping
into another one. It may breathe new life into the debates on
multiculturalism, too. This project looks, sounds and says things into
new combinations while honoring cultures of the past. It also allows for the
darker sides of immigration and alienation. It is a hands on and interactive
project that challenges the viewer to create their own new art forms.
There will be three other incredible interactive art pieces at the same time.
Come experience them all. I hope that you - in the Southern California
area especially - can make the opening:
Saturday, August 14, 6-9 PM. The sneak
preview is from 6-7, which encompasses a talk with the artists and is $10. From
7-9 PM the galleries are open to the public free of charge. Parking is also
free. Visit Doris's web site

Mishka Mojabber Mourani discusses Balconies: A Mediterranean
Memoir
The people of the Mediterranean consider their balconies natural
extensions of their homes, and their balconies are vital to their personal
spaces, says author Mishka Mojabber Mourani in her book Balconies: A
Mediterranean Memoir. She will discuss her book on Thursday, August 18, 7 pm, at the Glendale Public Library Auditorium,
222 East Harvard Street, Glendale, CA 91205. For more information call (818)
548-2042 or see the Library website: http://library.ci.glendale.ca.us/Authors_Artists_Friends.asp.
People from the Mediterranean use their balconies as social and
breathing spaces, confessionals and a means both to distance themselves from,
and become participants in, occurrences marking their lives. In Mourani's case,
those balconies in Alexandria, Athens and Beirut, also witnessed wars, civil
and otherwise, exile, and the meaning of identity and plurality.
.
The last conflict Mourani endured was Israel's onslaught on
Lebanon in July 2006 during which she saw Beirut being pounded and the
capital's port targeted, a few hundred yards from her sixth-floor balcony.
Mourani's earlier balcony also had its share of strife. Militiamen, who broke
into her family's home, used its exposed location during Lebanon's 1975-1990
civil war to shoot at their enemies.
Mishka Mojabber Mourani is the senior vice president of
International College, a leading private school in Lebanon, who helped keep the
institution running through the country's various upheavals.
This free lecture is sponsored by the Friends of the Glendale
Public Library.
