By Mary Jane Cherry

Diocese of Kentucky Communications Director

Frank and forward-looking, Bishop Terry White, in his second convention address in nine months, set out five initiatives to help the people of the Diocese of Kentucky in 2012 "discover how to be more effective in feeding, tending and proclaiming" while doing God's work amid changing circumstances.

The bishop gave the address to more than 200 attending Morning Prayer during the 184th diocesan convention, which met Nov. 11 and 12 at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Louisville.  Read more

Fifteen persons were elected to various boards, committees and offices, but not before a little excitement occurred when the sole nomination of the long-time Secretary of the Diocese, Kay Shields Wilkinson, was challenged from the floor--for the first time, at least in memory. Read more

Bishop's appointments for diocesan committees also were announced at the convention and are now posted online.

 News briefly

Time is running out for tax-free gifts from IRA's

By W. Robinson Beard, Chancellor of the Diocese of Kentucky

An on-again, off-again federal law that provides the ability for individuals age 70 1/2 and older to make distributions from their traditional IRA (or Roth IRA) accounts directly to qualified non-profit organizations will expire December 31.  The law allows this group of individuals to make the distributions without having to include them in their income for federal tax purposes.

(The Tax Relief, Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization and Job Creation Act of 2010 included this opportunity for years 2010 and 2011.  As of now, this opportunity has not been extended.  Employer-sponsored plans, such as SEP IRAs, Simple IRAs, 401(k)s, and 403(b)s do not qualify).

Charitable distributions under this law must be distributed as outright gifts directly from the IRA administrator, such as a brokerage firm or insurance company, to a principal charity, such as The Protestant Episcopal Diocese of Kentucky, Inc. or a Parish corporation, rather than to a supporting organization of either the Diocese or a parish.  Such distributions must not pass through a donor's hands to qualify.

If you think you can take advantage of this opportunity with respect to an IRA you have determined will not be needed in your estate plans, contact Rob Beard, president of the Endowment Corporation of Christ Church Cathedral (wbeard@stites.com) or your own tax advisor before Christmas. This may be a convenient way to make a sizable gift to support the mission and ministry of the diocese or your parish.

A chance to learn your ABCD's

School of Ministry offers community outreach training

School of Ministry's ABCD poster
Complete a registration form, and share the above poster with your congregation

Is your parish looking for ways to revitalize your community outreach? Are you seeking to reach beyond the walls of your church, and build new collaborative partnerships? Do you struggle to find a meaningful response to the sometimes-overwhelming needs around us?

If your answer is yes, Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) may be just the toolkit you have been looking for! ABCD is an approach to engaging effectively with the communities around us. It emphasizes building on the strengths and assets in our midst rather than being stymied by the tremendous needs.

The diocese's School of Ministry invites all interested persons to join the faculty and students to receive the training, which will be presented by the Rev. Deacon Elaine Clements during this weekend (Nov. 18-19) at All Saints Conference Center near Leitchfield.

Dec. 3 meeting set

Letter about forming a Society of Mary ward here

By Sandford MacLean, Calvary Church, Louisville

Dear Friends in Christ,

For some time now, I have wondered why there was not a greater devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary in the Diocese of Kentucky. There are obvious answers, of course, but I felt the absence allowed for poor teaching of the role Our Lady plays in Salvation history. Over the years I have talked with priests and layfolk about this, and the conversation frequently came round to the desire to form a ward or chapter of the Society of Mary within the diocese. I believe the time is now!

This Sunday morning (Nov. 20), Don Vish, a Louisville attorney and photographer who is also director of outreach, education and advocacy for the Kentucky Coalition to Abolish the Death Penality, will speak at the the Dean's Forum at Christ Church Cathedral in Louisville.  His talk will be on "Kentucky's Modern Use of the Death Penalty: An Unusual Punishment,"

In addition to speaking about Kentucky's use of the death penalty, he will address the question: who gets the death penalty and why? The forum takes place at 9 a.m. (EST) every Sunday in the cathedral's Bishop's Hall, 421 S. Second St. in downtown Louisville.

Retreat into compassion this January

"Retreat into Compassion: Reflections on Christian Life" is a title you will want take note of and act upon in January.

Borrowing the name from Henri Nouwen's book, the diocese's Division of Peace and Justice is planning a retreat that will use the book and have participants "examin[ing] how compassion is central to our Christian life." But participants will be asked to do more than talk: they will participate in creating a six-unit study series for use in adult Christian formation classes or as a Lenten study series.

Planning ahead

Dear Readers,

Because of the shortened work week and post-convention news and catch-up, this is an abbreviated Episco-Blast. Time just ran out to include more news, including the latest news from the wider church and beyond.

The diocesan offices will be closed Thanksgiving week because staff members are taking some vacation days. They will be checking email and voice mail daily. We wish you and your families a Happy Thanksgiving.

Faithfully, Mary Jane
