New Seeds internship program already producing new seeds through service

New Seeds interns join cathedral folks at Bats game
New Seeds interns join Cathedral Dean Mark Bourlakas and others on an outing to a Louisville Bats game. Photo posted on facebook.

A new residential young adult internship program based at Christ Church Cathedral in Louisville has been launched in the Diocese of Kentucky, bringing interns to serve various Louisville parishes and organizations.

Administered by the Rev. Canon Amy Coultas, young adults missioner, the program is funded in part by a grant from Trinity Wall Street's grant program, working with the Episcopal Service Corps, and by churches and organizations in the diocese.

Locally named the "New Seeds Internship Program," the new initiative provides spiritual and service opportunities for young adult "millennial" Episcopalians, who Coultas describes on her web page "as the new seeds of a Church that is experiencing the world shifting in radical ways."  The program name, she wrote, is influenced by Thomas Merton's work New Seeds of Contemplation. "Merton experienced his famous 'epiphany' just two blocks from our building. He was overcome with God's love for humanity and was called to begin living his contemplative life in a new way that reached out to those outside the monastery, and he began rethinking the connection between prayer and service...."

"The contemplative discipline produces new seeds in our life as Christians. The interns' service to the poor and vulnerable in our world will plant new seeds of mercy and compassion in the lives of those they serve and in our community.... We expect the intern experience will not just be a 'gap year' but will plant new seeds that will grow throughout your [the intern's] life as a 21st century Christian."

Only weeks here, the interns are already planting seeds through service.  Read the article below to see one program involving their service. Look for more about the interns in future issues.

Resurrection tutoring program seeks volunteers

By the Rev. Suzanne Warner, Resurrection Church

Beginning in October, Resurrection Episcopal Church will launch a pilot program for Karen and Karenni students primarily from our church families. The program will meet on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons after school and will include homework help and tutoring, worship and a light meal, followed by a youth activity.

Episcopal churches and others in the community who are interested in this ministry will join Resurrection to provide staffing. Coordinating the new program will be a newcomer to the diocese, Corin Hooper, one of the five interns from the Episcopal Church's New Seeds Intern Program, and the Rev. Mary Abrams, a deacon at resurrection.

Volunteers will commit time from 3 to 7 p.m. on some Tuesdays or Thursdays. They have three ways to serve:  they may provide homework help and tutoring in the English language and other subjects for middle and high school students; bring a simple supper for the youth and adult helpers; or organize a small group of friends to simplify transportation and make the afternoon even more fun. Financial support in any amount is always welcomed to provide for the program.

Click here for more details about the program from Mary Abrams.

Convention bound

Register online by Oct. 15

First set of pre-convention materials now available

Sent by U.S. mail in previous years to clergy and parish leaders, the first set of pre-convention materials, including registration instruction, is now available online at "Convention 2011" on the Diocese of Kentucky website (http://www.episcopalky.org).

The materials offer information about registration, hotels, the tentative agenda and more information about the upcoming 184th Convention of the Diocese of Kentucky, which will be Nov. 11 and 12 at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Louisville. This is the second diocesan convention to be held this year as the diocese transitions to a Fall annual gathering. (A list of links to specific information may be found at the end of this article).

An important change for this convention: registration will be done entirely online at http://www.episcopalky.org/convention-registration.html. Those who have previously registered online for diocesan events may find the registration form and process familiar. For those who have not registered on the diocese's website before, the convention registration form includes detailed instructions. However, those having difficulties in completing the form may contact Mary Jane Cherry, the diocese's communications director, for assistance. She may be reached at the diocesan office (502-584-7148) or at maryjane@episcopalky.org
