All Saints Camper diving at the pool

A 2010 summer camper caught mid-air over the pool

When I was a young boy, summertime meant Little League baseball, collecting fireflies, warm evenings playing kick-the-can while running through neighborhood yards free of fences, the luxury of an electric fan at the foot of bed, and listening to a ball game on the radio or reading as late as you wanted (or could get away with). And of course, summer meant swimming.

Bagpipers and acolytes lead procession in cemetery

By The Rev. Ken Thompson

Commemoration Committee

Whoever said "Liturgy is Drama" was proven correct on Saturday, June 11, 2011, when a group of Episcopalians and their friends gathered in thanksgiving for the ministry of Sister Emily Cooper an

d in remembrance of all the forgotten children.

One part of the drama began with the gathering of believers who, after 138 years, gave recognition to the unusual ministry of one of their own. Sister Emily, an Episcopal deaconess, was sent to Louisville to serve as the director of Home of the Innocents in 1880. She oversaw the care of its sick and abandoned children through the early 1900s.   Read more

Presiding Bishop urges G20 agricultural ministers

to invest in food security

By Episcopal Church Office of Public Affairs

[June 22, 2011] In anticipation of the G20 agricultural meeting this week in Paris, France, Episcopal Church Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori urged US Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack to consider "the needs of people in developing countries most affected by food insecurity."

"I am mindful of the budget shortfalls presently faced by the United States and most of the world's industrialized countries," she noted. "Increasing investment in food security, however, will strengthen the entire global economy and ultimately lead to billions of dollars in savings for the United States and other industrialized countries. Investment in food security truly is investment in the future."

Sermons That Work

June 26, 2011 - Second Sunday After Pentecost, Proper 8 - Year A

By the Rev. Kay Sylvester

(RCL) Genesis 22:1-14 and Psalm 13 (Track 2: Jeremiah 28:5-9 and Psalm
89:1-4, 15-18); Romans 6:12-23; Matthew 10:40-42

"The wages of sin is death." Pulled out of the context of the majestic
letter to the church in Rome, this short statement sounds ominous; we
have all sinned, according to the same letter. If we read this
standing by itself, we might conclude that there is no hope for us.

Or we begin to justify ourselves. We try to imagine what we've done
that deserves the death penalty, and can't come up with anything - and
so we choose to ignore this statement, assuming it's for someone else.  Read more
