Leaders of The Episcopal Church seek input
from members on proposed Anglican Covenant
All congregations in the Episcopal Church were invited last year to study the proposed Anglican Covenant and share their insights with their diocese's bishops and convention-bound deputies before the next General Convention, meeting in 2012 in Indianapolis. The time is near to share those responses, if possible by April 24. The Church's Executive Council has asked for responses from the bishops and diocesan deputations by that date in order to "reflect the Church's initial response to the final draft of the Anglican Covenant, and to be included in Executive Council's Blue Book Report to the 77th General Convention." As the highest legislative authority of The Episcopal Church, the General Convention is the body that will ultimately decide The Episcopal Church's position with respect to participation in an Anglican Communion Covenant.
Responses may be sent directly to gcoffice@episcopalchurch.org

Music for vital congregations
By Janet Irwin, Episcopal News Editor Emeritus
Music and Vital Congregations: A Practical Guide for Clergy by William Bradley Roberts 129 pp Church Publishing New York 2009 Dr. Bill Roberts is well known in the Diocese of Kentucky not only for the work he did during his tenure as minister of music at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Louisville, but also for the many lectures and workshops he has given across the country while holding posts in California, Arizona and Washington, DC, and now as professor of church music at Virginia Seminary.
In this little handbook, Roberts offers guidance to both clergy and musicians in ways they can work together to better meet the needs of their congregation. "Give them great music and great preaching, and they will come," he quotes from the words of an African American Baptist preacher. Both preaching and music are needed for effective worship, but too often, due to their diverse backgrounds and training, clergy and music leaders have difficulty working and planning together. Sewanee gets scholarship grant for African student Episcopal News Service, March 17, 2011
The J. Christopher Flowers Foundation has given $80,000 to the University of the South's School of Theology to fund a scholarship program for an African student. "I am deeply grateful for this commitment to support an African theological student at the University of the South," the Very Rev. William Stafford, theology school dean, said in a press release. "The benefits of this are transformative for all parties as it can open up an American student body to un-dreamed realities and it almost always strengthens the leadership of the African churches. The resulting relationships are very welcome in a time of institutional fracture."
The release said the gift will cover the cost of a two-year seminary education for an African student -- either a priest or a very advanced ordinand -- in the master of arts degree program. The grant will cover tuition, books, room, board, personal expenses, health insurance, and transportation, including a summer back in the student's home, according to the release. Read more |
