Mainframe-style data sharing comes to AIX
There has been much excitement and debate at Triton following the news of the DB2 pureScale release. It is fair to say that there has been a bit of banter between our z series team and our midrange team! The z guys have been looking a little smug and extolling the virtues of z series data sharing whilst the midrange team have been busily getting up to speed on the "cool" new technology and leaving the "dinosaurs" to it!
We'd love to hear your thoughts on this latest technology release - join our LinkedIn group and let us know what you think!
DB2 pureScale overview
This new technology is currently built on IBM Power Systems with other platforms available in the future. DB2 pureScale allows organisations to have multiple database servers in a system that all share a common set of disks providing both scalability, availability and application transparency.
"This is the single most significant technology release that IBM has introduced to the midrange market in years. By utilizing many years of mainframe data sharing experience, DB2 pureScale will revolutionise the way organisations are able to manage their workload, helping them to achieve industry-leading levels of scalability and availability for their mission critical applications." said Julian Stuhler, Triton Director & Past President of IDUG (International DB2 Users Group) "Triton have been working with data sharing on the mainframe since it appeared in the mid-90's. It is hugely exciting to know that we will be able to put these skills into practice for our midrange customers now too."

DB2 Consultant's blog

Opinions are split when talking about IT certification and its importance in the industry. It is easy enough to pick up a book and study chapter after chapter, running through sample questions. Once confident enough you sit the exam and pass and then move on to the next one. Currently I am working my way through the IBM Optim Certification. The simple "read the manual" approach does not apply to this particular certification. It is important to study but also to apply what you are studying and that is what I am currently doing with Optim. Get yourself a working demo and then work through the various revision notes and create actual archive files, extract files, access definitions etc. You may be wondering what Optim is and what an archive file has to do with anything so I have decided to share my learnings with you as I go along...... click here to follow my blog. |
IOD Update
By Julian Stuhler
As part of the IBM Gold Consultant Program I spent 4 days in Las Vegas at the "Gold Briefing" session prior to IBM's Information on Demand event.
There was an amazing array of information and new announcements at this years event. There are a couple of major themes beginning to emerge.
The first of these is the concept of "Information-Led Transformation", something we'll be hearing a lot about over the coming months. IBM has long provided enterprises with the basic tools to effectively store and manage their data and content, with products such as DB2, IMS, Informix and Content Manager storing a huge proportion of the world's business data. During the past few years, the capabilities of these platforms have been steadily expanded as part of the "Information On Demand" strategy. Products such as InfoSphere help to integrate diverse information silos and deliver consistent, trusted information that can be used for advanced analytics and thereby help to improve business performance. IBM has spent more than $12 billion in acquisitions in this area, with Cognos and more recently SPSS filling significant gaps in the Information Management product portfolio by providing advanced reporting and analytical capabilities. Last year, IBM launched the "Information Agenda": a strategy to wrap the expanding Information On Demand stack with a comprehensive set of services, roadmaps and industry-specific data models to help customers to more rapidly exploit the capabilities of the technology. Over 1,000 engagements later, this is now a proven approach that has been applied to enterprises all around the world.
And so to the present, and the latest step in the evolution of IBMs grand plan. This year's big push is to use the flexible information platform delivered by the Information On Demand stack and the Information Agenda to not just improve the performance of your existing business but to help to fundamentally transform the business itself: Information-Led Transformation. This is a bold claim, and one that will require another significant expansion in IBM's technology and services offerings if it is to stand a chance of succeeding.
