Greetings!
Summer is upon us! We are revving up for a great summer of a Family Retreat, two Boys Camp Sessions, and Marianist Life. We begin the summer with the Marianist Brothers Retreat, and then an afternoon wedding for the Kimmell and Schmerber Families. Additonally, Teens from St. Matthews in San Antonio will be here for their ACTS Retreat in June, followed on the Fourth of July weekend by St. Leo's Young Adult ACTS Retreat, and then into August with several other retreats. Please do not hesitate to drop by to see us when you're in the area! It's a beautiful place to be! |
Main House Courtyard Landscaping In an effort to rebound from the loss of the beautiful live oak trees in the Courtyard area, a modest landscaping program was initiated this month. After the trees were cut down last fall, the stumps were ground down to a level that could be covered with a rock bedding area. Greenery will be be planted in these areas, along with plantings put in boxes, and hanging baskets in the area. Temporary canopy shades will be purchased for the foreseeable future, while funding is sought for large cedar elm trees to replace the natural shade recently lost. These trees will cost approximately $2000 each. Anyone wishing to support this project, please contact Kay at your earliest convenience! She can be reached at 830-866-3425, 830-928-2984, or by email, director@tecaboca.com. |
One Star Foundation Grant Received!
Tecaboca recently received a grant of nearly $25,000 from the OneStar Foundation. OneStar supports the nonprofit sector and its stakeholders through initiatives that increase civic engagement, research, rigorous evaluation and nonprofit organizational excellence. Their goal is to achieve sustainable social impact throughout the larger nonprofit infrastructure. The Foundation is funded through the State of Texas, and was originally mandated in 1976, and has existed in some form under most administrations since then. Tecaboca's grant is through the Renewing Our Communities Program, and will fund Tecaboca's self assessment and strategic planning process, as well as build a collaboration with the West Kerr County School Districts, with the intent of developing a leadership program that can be used in the schools, at Tecaboca, and in a program to be developed that will partner Tecaboca with the local districts to have school children at Tecaboca during the school year. We believe that this project will prepare Tecaboca for the next decade as we chart our course in all of the ministries in which we engage. |
Save the Date! Friends of Tecaboca Weekend August 13, 2010!
Friends of Tecaboca, you are invited to join us for a weekend of fun together enjoying Tecaboca on August 13, 14, and 15. Come for a day, an afternoon, or the full weekend to swim, canoe, hike, and sit and enjoy the sacred ground of Tecaboca. Reminisce with old friends and make new memories with folks you meet. A group of area Tecaboca friends are planning a NIGHT IN OLD MEXICO fandango for Saturday night to raise funds for the back entrance to Tecaboca. More and more often, we see the need for large buses, emergency vehicles, or retreat groups to enter through the back way, especially during rainy periods. Saturday night, August 14, this group will put on an exciting time of food, music, and fun on the shores of Johnson Creek. It will be a great time! Mark your calendars to attend. More information will be provided as it becomes available. |

Tecaboca is a sum of many parts, of the many folks who have put heart and soul into her over the years. As I have had the privilege of showing up to work here for nearly a year, many days I am afforded the opportunity to look into the past through old files, old award plaques stashed here and there, and board minutes. What a rich heritage Tecaboca has! I hear many stories from the men who first glimpsed the future as they looked for the perfect place for a boys camp, way back in 1951. They say they stood on the overlook, and KNEW it was the place! And, as they say, the rest is history, but a rich history, indeed. Everyone who receives this email newsletter is a part of her history, and if you have any stories you can tell, we want to hear them! It is nearly time to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the establishment of Tecaboca. Please remain a part of her history by writing down your memories. We will be making a call later this year to gather the story of her first sixty years!
Many thanks for being a part of Tecaboca,
