PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Thank you to Kelly Ingalls for speaking at our January PTA meeting. Her talk was very enlightening especially concerning hand-washing as the number one preventive measure in controlling the spread of viruses and lice. In fact, I think we all now know more about lice than we ever wanted to know. But I believe it's important to get correct information disseminated so that families know how to deal with lice if it should become an issue. And remember you should never proactively treat lice even if you believe your child has been exposed. If you have any further questions, Kelly is always available via e-mail. We should also thank Wildfire Restaurant for delivering tons of their extremely delicious chopped salad and key lime pie. By the amount eaten and the feedback I received, I know both were huge hits. Please make sure to mention Freedom Hill's when you visit Wildfire located by Macy's in Tysons II.
Thank you to Kavita Malhotra for organizing another terrific science fair. We had a record number of participants. The nearly forty exhibits were out of this world. Clearly our FABULOUS Freedom Hill students worked very hard and came up with some very diverse and interesting exhibits and experiments. Congratulations to all who participated.
We have two Family Dinner Outs scheduled. The first is next Wednesday's at Chuck E. Cheese in Fairfax. It's actually quite sane there on a Wednesday night; parents can do some socializing of their own. Freedom Hill students will receive a reminder sticker next Wednesday that they can bring to Chuck E. Cheese that night and redeem for 10 FREE tokens. Faculty eats free! You can show up at Chuck E. Cheese anytime between 3 pm - 9 pm and let them know you're with Freedom Hill when you place your order. Then on February 27, please support the 6th graders at Silver Diner. Freedom Hill families who dine there between 5 pm and 9 pm will have the special treat of being waited on by the sixth graders as they raise money for their end of the year events.
Auditions for the March 11 Freedom Hill Variety Show will be held on February 11 beginning at 1:30 pm. If you are considering auditioning, please keep in mind that there will be MANDATORY practices on February 25, March 3 and March 10. More information on auditions and the show will be available shortly.
We're also already thinking ahead to the March 7th auction (yes, we're still looking for help) and the April 25th Freedom Hill versus Wolftrap Elementary School Faculty Basketball Game. The auction's success depends on everyone contributing. If there are businesses you frequent, please consider printing a copy of our donation letter and requesting a donation. Kris Delta is maintaining a master list of all businesses that have been solicited so contact her if you are concerned that a business has already been solicited. And of course let her know if you plan to solicit a business so we don't burden businesses with double requests. In addition, those of you with second homes, sports tickets, "celebrity" connections, please consider donating these items as they have been huge moneymakers in the past.
The Freedom Hill versus Wolftrap Elementary School Faculty Basketball game is a new event we hope to turn into an annual one. Mark your calendars to come and cheer on our FABULOUS faculty at Marshall High School on April 25. We'll be selling food and spirit items at the event so we'll be looking for volunteers as the event draws closer. In the meantime save the date.
A big thanks to Kira Merski who has raised over $750 so far from Box Tops. Congratulations to Mrs. Anderson's and Mrs. Walker's First Graders for winning the last Box Top contest. Enjoy your sno-cones. Look for information on the next Box Top Party coming soon.
Chitra Sudarshan is working hard to try and arrange another Mad Science class that would begin in February. Most likely this class would be taught on Mondays, but we are still working out the details of both finding available space at Freedom Hill and finding an instructor available from Mad Science. Other afterschool activities that are beginning and still have room include Afterschool Basketball, Story & Craft Hour, Digital Photography and Clay Café. All of these can be prorated if you've already missed some classes or if your child is enrolled in Chess Club, Cooking Class or Scouts.
That's it for this week except for another huge thank you to all who have joined and contributed for the Smart Board purchases. They should be arriving shortly. Faculty members will give a brief Smart Board demonstration so you can see what great, interactive learning tools Smart Boards are at the next PTA meeting which is schedule for February 7 (please note this is a Thursday). In addition, Kilmer's principal, Debbie Hernandez, will be coming to discuss life in middle school and to answer any questions you may have.

NEXT PTA MEETING IS THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 7th at 7:15pm
Come see a demonstration of the new Smart Boards the PTA is purchasing for the school as well as a discussion with Debbie Hernandez, the principal at Kilmer Middle School.
See you there! (please note it is Thursday!)

Volunteers Notes
- Attention Jump Rope for Heart fans! Mrs Deeney is looking for someone to handle the collection and accounting of donations for the Jump Rope for Heart event to be held on February 15th.
- We are looking for someone to assist Margaret Walter with the Spring Gift Card sale, and handle the two sales in the 2008-2009 school year.
- We are still in need of volunteers to help copy the school newsletter. We'd be happy to work with 8th graders in need of community service hours.
- We are always looking for help with the upcoming dinner/dance/auction.
Please contact Kris Delta at kndelta@yahoo.com if you're interested.
THANKS TO . . .
- Thanks to Tammy Musgrove for the donation of carpet remnants to be used for our students when they sit on the floor.

(please excuse us if we missed anyone in the above list!)

SAVE THE DATE - SPAGHETTI DINNER/FAMILY DANCE & SILENT AUCTION/RAFFLE - MARCH 7
The much anticipated event of the year - our Third Annual Spaghetti Dinner/Family Dance with Silent Auction and Raffle - is scheduled for March 7. Please mark your calendars. In order for the event to be a success we never EVERYONE'S participation. We need families to donate items, attend the dinner/dance, and bid on items and purchase raffle tickets. Please start thinking now about what you can contribute. Don't think you have anything to donate??? You're crazy. Everyone has something they can contribute you just don't know what it is yet. Our PTA website has some great donation ideas . . . many of which are inexpensive others you could get together with your neighbors to do. We have both personal and business donation forms on our website as well. Again, to be successful, we need everyone to participate. We are also looking for some volunteers to be part of our working committees: Teacher Donations; Food; Decorations, Donations, Displays and Thank Yous. If you are interested in helping out please contact Kris Delta at kndelta@yahoo.com. I know this is a busy time of year, but volunteering now won't require work on your part until after the new year.
Do you frequent a business that you think may donate an item? Print this donation letter to show your potential donor!
Believe it or not!!
TABLES FOR AUCTION NEEDED
The past two years we have used approximately 30 extra 6 foot tables to display all the wonderful auction donations. For the past two years we have been able to reserve tables through Fairfax County Public Schools free of charge. This year, oddly, all FCPS extra tables are reserved for March 7. We have a quote for over $350 which includes delivery and pick up of the 30 tables. We hate to spend hard-earned, desperately needed auction dollars on table rentals. If you have any contacts that could provide us with free table rentals for March 7 we would ask that you use them for Freedom Hill's benefit. Please contact Kris Delta or Dianne Gurdak if you have any leads or for further information. |
MARK YOUR CALENDAR FOR JANUARY 23rd FOR OUR NEXT FAMILY DINNER OUT!
A fun time to spend with friend and family!
Meet us on Wednesday, January 23rd at Chuck E. Cheese in Fairfax for a fun evening with family and friends. It is not as crazy as you think! It is actually quite civilized in the middle of the week (not like those birthday party saturdays!). Let your kids run wild while catching up with the adults.
See you there!

Mad Science News
Due to space constraints we will be unable to hold another Mad Science session in February/March. If space permits, we will bring Mad Science back for April and May.

GRACE ART presents art of the Americas.
January brings early sculpture from the Americas to the classroom. We will be presenting sculpture from Inuit, Incas, Mayans and more. Look for your child's project along with a note for the parents describing what we presented. |
There are a few remaining gift cards still available from our last gift card sale.
2x$25 AMC Theatre 1x$25 Barnes & Noble
If you're shopping at Giant or using Peapod.com, why not pay using Giant Gift Cards?
The PTA tries to sponsor fundraisers that don't cost you additional money or time. We purchase Giant gift cards at a discount and sell them to you at face value. It's a great way for you to support the school while you're shopping and for us to make money without a lot of effort.
Why not always have a Giant gift card in your wallet, even for those quick trips in for a couple of items? We normally buy gift cards in $100 and $300 denominations, but they're also available in $10, $20, $25 and $50 denominations.
Contact Margaret Walter at 703-356-5786 or margaretwalter2002@yahoo.com with questions or to place an order; she'll deliver the cards to you. |
Your Grocery Cards are Adding Up!
If you still have not registered your Giant and Safeway cards, please send your card information to Earling or Stacy and they can do it for you.
IF YOU DO NOT SEE THE A+ BONUS BUCKS TOTALS AT THE BOTTOM OF YOUR GIANT RECEIPT, THEN YOUR PURCHASES ARE NOT HELPING OUR SCHOOL!
If you have any questions or need assistance please contact: Earling DeGraff earling@juno.com (703) 242-6304 or
Stacey Heller at StaceyHeller@aol.com (703) 917-1640
THIS IS MONEY THAT GOES DIRECTLY TO THE SCHOOL FOR THEIR USE WHERE IT IS NEEDED MOST! IT COSTS YOU NOTHING TO SUPPORT YOUR SCHOOL THROUGH YOUR EVERYDAY SHOPPING. BE SURE YOU ARE REGISTERED! WE SHOULD HAVE 100% PARTICIPATION.
