Centennial Celebration Concludes On High Note
Our
St. John's Centennial Celebration concluded this weekend with three terrific events, starting with Saturday evening's Annual Benefit Concert, given by our Combined Choirs.  The concert featured organ music and choral works, including the aptly titled Locus Iste a Deo Factus Est (This Place was Made by God) of Bruckner, Blessed Be the God and Father of Wesley and How Lovely Is Thy Dwelling Place of Brahms.  The concert, attended by more than 200 people, was called "the best ever" by more than one attendee, and further enhanced the reputation of our fine choirs.

The celebration continued with a lovely reception and dinner at Palma Ceia Golf and Country Club on Saturday evening.  Nearly 300 parishioners joined together to celebrate, and enjoyed remarks from our  Assisting Bishop Barry Howe, as well as time to visit with fellow parishioners and former clergy and staff of St. John's, and a slideshow featuring the parish's history from 1912 to today.

The celebration concluded with a reception in Rudisill Parish Hall between the 9:00 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. services on Sunday, September 30.  This event included another chance to view the slideshow, as well as the opportunity to enjoy snacks and fellowship.

One hundred years of making God's word known in South Tampa is something to celebrate!  We are grateful especially for the hard work of McIver Berner, Jefferie VanLoveren, Robin Gonzalez, Steve Stanford, Sally Thompson, Ginny VanOsdol, and the members of our Combined Choirs for making this a weekend to remember.

Thanks to Keith Lindquist for the photographs!  Visit us on Facebook to see more.
Church and School Children Give to Uganda
Pictured here is nine-year-old Baldwin Barnes, donating the proceeds of saving a dollar a day for his adopted brother in Uganda, ten-year-old  Rheagan.  All it takes is a $1 a day to change a child's life by providing  food, clothes, and an education.   Also pictured is Outreach Committee member Peggy Curlin, gladly accepting the donation on behalf of St. John's Church.
Also, from now through Friday, October 19, the children at the St. John's School Middle Division will have collection jars in each homeroom for Kamaiba Primary School, our sister school in Uganda.  The goal is for each classroom to raise $25 to fund Kamaiba students' books and supplies.  Kamaiba volunteers in each grade will collect the change from their respective homerooms: Carson Eckhard (8th), Bradley French (7th), Lillie Lowry (6th), and Hannah Rix (5th).

We thank all of these children for their support of our Kamaiba friends and congratulate them for setting an excellent example!  If you would like to join the effort, please contact Peggy Curlin at pcurlin@verizon.net or Kim French at frenchco@verizon.net.
Ackerman Returns to St. John's, Will Interview To Be Postulant
Navy Lt. Chase Ackerman and his wife, Jeanne, along with their newborn son, Jonathan, will be in Tampa from Monday, November 5, through Monday, November 12.  During that time, Chase will interview as a part of his application to be admitted as a Postulant for Holy Orders.  Chase is now stationed in Naples, Italy, but worshipped with us until last year while he was stationed here at MacDill Airforce Base.

Chase and his family will be staying with parishioners who have graciously offered them their guest house.  In addition, it would be nice if we could offer him the use of an automobile while they are here.    The Ackermans could also use a pack-n-play (or similar type) portable crib for their baby, Jonathan.  If anyone can help with either of these needs, please let Fr. Remer know at once by calling the parish offices at 259.1570 or by emailing him at dremer@stjohnstampa.org.
Events

Parents' Ministry Meeting

All adults are invited to the Parents' Ministry Sunday school class in Classroom 101 on Sunday, October 7, following the 9:00 a.m. service.  The class has been centered on fellowship and coffee talk of our daily lives as Christians, with emphasis on what it means to be a part of the Body of Christ through taking care of AND learning from our children as parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins, etc.

The structure has been formatted around group consensus of discussion topics, typically started with a short summary led by a facilitator, with discussion following.  A few examples of topics covered in the past include spiritual development of children, Christian family traditions, "Tiger Moms," empathy, fear, forgiveness, and acceptance and growth.  Examples of books discussed have included The Five Love Languages of Children, You're Not the Boss of Me, and The Spiritual Path of Parenting.

Participants really value the "calm strength" and "patient wisdom" that has been shared throughout the group's discussions.  Please join the group for discussion of their next chapter! (Thank you, Julie and Michael Sunich, who have led the class for the past four years!)  If you have any questions or comments, please contact Hugh or Laura Cruse (hugh.cruse@gmail.com, lmcruse@gmail.com or 839-6789)
Calling All Middle and High School Students! Youth Sunday School Is Now During the 9:00 a.m. Service!
Come get to know your peers and build a community of love, while learning about the Word!  Youth Sunday School is now called "Rap  Hour" and will take place during the 9:00 a.m. service in Discovery House (on the south end of the church property).  Breakfast will be provided.  The group will be led by parish parents Alliston Duryea, John Reffue, and Eli Pento.

Youth, come to Discovery House when you arrive at church.  You will rejoin your family in the church after the announcements.  Hope to see you there!

Gala Organ & Choir Concert Featuring David Briggs

Friday, October 19, 7:30 p.m., Church

This concert will feature David Briggs, former organist of Truro and Gloucester Cathedrals in England, where our own Simon Morley served as his assistant during the early '90s. Mr. Briggs is one of the world's foremost organists and composers, and is especially known for his skill in the art of improvisation. This concert has been subtitled "The Notre Dame Experience," not least because of Mr. Briggs' affinity with French  organ music and the Parisian organ scene. At this concert, Mr. Briggs will be joined by our St. John's Ensemble in a performance of "Messe Solennelle" of Louis Vierne. Vierne was himself organist of Notre Dame Cathedral from 1900 until his death (at the console of the organ) in 1937. We hope you will join us for what promises to be a spectacular concert event!  For the entire schedule of music events for the year, please click here.

Mother Stefanie Taylor To Take Part in Women's Leadership Panel at University of South Florida
Our own Mother Taylor has been tapped to participate in the 7th annual USF Women in Leadership & Philanthropy Symposium on Friday, October 19.  Mother Taylor will be part of a panel on "Breaking New Ground," women in traditionally male-dominated careers.  She will join Jane Castor, Tampa's Police Chief, Amber McCuistion, Senior Intelligence Analyst for US Central Command, and Regina Kunkle, Vice President of NetApp.

The Women in Leadership & Philanthropy program at USF is focused on engaging and educating its members in support of women and women's initiatives through the USF system and in the community.  To learn more about USF WLP or the Symposium, click here.
Your Action Needed

Help Needed: Middle School Youth Parent Chaperones

Due to the unprecedented attendance at Middle School Youth Group of more than 50 youth for the first two Sundays of the year, Mother Taylor will be splitting the group into two, one comprised of 6th graders and one comprised of 7th and 8th graders. One group will be in the youth house hearing a message and having dinner with Mother Taylor, and the other group will be in the gym with Nick Herrin (school music teacher and associate organist) doing music and games - then the groups will switch. In order to make this work, two parent volunteers are needed each Sunday. Please email Mother Taylor at staylor@stjohnstampa.org with questions or to lend a hand.

A Bag of Food = A Bag of Hope: Support Metropolitan Ministries

Help stop hunger this holiday season!  St. John's annual holiday food drive for Metropolitan Ministries starts this Sunday.  Please take one of the brown bags with the Metropolitan Ministries shopping list attached and make a family's Thanksgiving holidays brighter.  Filled bags should be returned to the church on November 4.  If you need to drop yours off earlier, it may be left on the counter in the back of Rudisill Parish Hall.  Your generosity will make a real difference for a family in need this year!

The Great Tablecloth Mystery

When Miriam Faircloth and I were planning for Mother Stefanie's shower, we were unpleasantly surprised to discover that most of the round tablecloths, plus some of the rectangular ones, were missing in action.  St. John's is supposed to have both white and ecru tablecloths -- none of the ecru ones are in the closet in the Lowry Room, and we only found a couple of the round white ones.  There should be at least a dozen.  I ended up purchasing five additional white tablecloths which I have gifted to the church.  Another mystery is the fact that a big pile of very dirty tablecloths (but no ecru ones and only a couple of round ones) was found in the kitchen.  St. John's does not have a maid nor a laundry service.  If you are responsible for a church event that uses tablecloths, please take them home and wash them, fold them neatly, hang them on a hanger (the type most cleaners use for trousers with a cardboard roll on the bottom piece), and return them promptly to the closet in the Lowry Room.  If you have tablecloths that belong to the church at home, please return them.

Thanks!

Peggy Curlin
