First Middle School Youth Group of the Year Reaches Record Number of Young People!
This Sunday, September 16, Mother Stefanie Taylor held the first middle school youth group meeting, and more than 50 youth in grades 6 through 8 attended! Kids enjoyed dinner, had time for fellowship, played games, and heard a Bible lesson. Middle School Youth meets each Sunday except the final Sunday of each month at 5:30 at the Youth House adjacent to the school's Middle Division campus. If you didn't join us this weekend, don't miss out on the fun next Sunday!

Choir Corner: Summer New York and Washington Trip
As we enjoy the return of our choir gracing our services with their angelic voices, we wanted to recap their triumphant tour to New York City and Washington, DC. The choir sang a Festal Eucharist on Sunday, June 24, at St. Thomas Church, Fifth Avenue. Click here to go to the St. John's website where you can see a video of the choir rehearsing at St. Thomas. The group then traveled to Washington, where they sang two services of Choral Evensong at the National Cathedral on Monday, June 25, and Tuesday, June 26. Mr. Morley said of the tour: "I was, once again, struck by the ability of our choir to adapt quickly to different acoustical settings and seating arrangements on limited rehearsal time, and our rehearsals were among the most stress free that I can remember for an 'away game,' particularly given that we had one voice per part per side in some cases!" Special thanks from St. John's is due: to the tour committee comprised of Ginny Lindquist, Amy McMaster, Carole Page, and Jeremiah Pederson, who helped Mr. Morley with the planning of the trip (scouting out buses and restaurants and helping construct the itinerary); to Steve Galloway, who once again collated all the music and transported it for the choir; to Eric Stoll, who gave a very beautiful account of This is the Record of John at St. Thomas - a piece that was particularly appropriate given that the choir was singing for the feast of the Birth of St. John the Baptist; to Ben Graham, who did an outstanding job with the treble solos in Darke in F along with Marty Angiulli, Eric Stoll, and Steve Galloway; Stuart Lindquist, who set just the right tone at the beginning of Wash me throughly of Wesley; to Kevin Page, who played all of the accompaniments at St. Thomas on the Sunday morning with his customary diligence and unflappability; and to Michael Eachon, who went to great lengths to organize a tour of the Capitol Building at very short notice. Last, but by no means least, this trip would not have been possible without the hours of administration contributed by Sharon Stoll. Sharon has an incredible eye for detail in hotel and restaurant contracts, and spent hours in the office making sure that rooming lists, menus, and a whole host of other details were correct.

Kids In the Kitchen: Parish Breakfasts Begin
Sunday, September 16 marked the first Parish Breakfast of the year. Chef Dave Kenyon outdid himself, offering two different menu choices. The first, a tribute to our organist and choirmaster Simon Morley, was a British feast of bangers and mash, with toast and eggs. The second was a traditional Southern meal, including biscuits and gravy, scrambled eggs, and link sausage. The children of the parish helped to prepare and serve the meal, working the buffet line, wrapping silverware, and prepping biscuits and sausages for the oven.
More than 100 parishioners partook of the breakfast during the hour between the 9:00 a.m. and 11:15 a.m.services. What a great way to share our Christian life and fellowship!
Mark your calendars for the next breakfast on October 21. Parish breakfasts take place on the third Sunday of the month each month from September to May.

Cursillo News
Our own Ray Stoll was recently asked to serve on the Secretariat of the Cursillo of Southwest Florida. Cursillos in Christianity is a movement that, through a method of its own, tries to, and through God's grace manages to; enable the essential realities of the Christian to come to life in the uniqueness, originality, and creativity of each person. In becoming aware of their potential and while accepting their limitations, they exercise their freedom by their conviction, strengthen their will with their decision, to propitiate friendship in virtue of their constancy in both their personal and community life. The Secretariat is the governing committee of Cursillo, made up of 9 voting members (two of them are clergy in the diocese), plus two non-voting members: the Treasurer and Recording Secretary. The current Recording Secretary is also a St. John's parishioner, Sharon Stoll. St. John's has more than 50 "cursillistas" (i.e., Cursillo graduates) in our congregation, including Father Remer and Father Hehr.

Wednesday Nights at St. John's
This week, the Wednesday night group continues a three-part DVD series titled The Story Of Anglicanism. The roots of the Anglican tradition are traced from ancient and medieval foundations, through the Reformation and its consequences, with implications for creating a global family. Part I: Ancient and Medieval Foundations - The roots of our tradition are traced in the evolution and mission and ministry of the pre-Reformation English Church. Part II: Reformation and Its Consequences - Henry VIII's often misunderstood break with papal authority initiates the shaping of classical Anglicanism. Part III: Creating a Global Family - The Anglican genius for adaptation is seen in its response to the modern world and its evolution into a worldwide communion.
Bring your covered dish, favorite study Bible, and an open heart and mind for wonderful fellowship and stimulating conversation. For further information email Winkie or Paul Game at pgamefla@aol.com.

Friday, September 21 The Feast of St. Matthew, Apostle and Evangelist
|
Feast Day Facts: Matthew, one of Jesus' disciples, is probably to be identified with Levi, a tax collector mentioned by Mark and Luke. Matthew was called early in Jesus' ministry, but that he wrote the Gospel that bears his name is seriously doubted by scholars. Ironically, despite this, most art depicting St. Matthew shows him writing that titular book (as in the stained glass to the left, which is in St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Charleston, SC). It is, however, generally accepted that his "logia" or "sayings of Jesus" have been included in that Gospel.
Tradition has it that Matthew, having converted many persons to Christianity in Judea, traveled to the East, but there is no certain evidence for this. He has been venerated as a martyr, but the time and circumstances of his death are unknown.
