What a great event! The weather was warm, but the rain held off, providing a chance for friends old and new to visit and catch up. The grill was smoking (quite literally), but the valiant men of the FATHERS Ministry braved the additional heat to cook up burgers, chicken, veggie burgers, and hot dogs for all. Children enjoyed Kona ice as well as popcorn and blue raspberry cotton candy, served with a smile by members of the Youth Group and parents. The bounce house was the usual hit with the kids, especially the fast slide. From baked beans to deviled eggs to coleslaw to orange cake, the spread of food was extensive and varied. A few seasoned parishioners were even overheard declaring it to be the most food at a Block Party yet! We look forward to this coming Sunday's Ministry Day Round-Up, see you there!

Walking the Mourner's Path: New Session Begins September 25
Walking the Mourner's Path is a bereavement support program open to anyone who has experienced the death of a loved one at least six months prior to the beginning of the workshop and who is willing to commit to weekly sessions. Our purpose is to help people begin to heal their sorrow by offering the outstretched hand of Christ. The group is limited to 10 participants, creating a safe place to share feelings with each other and with God. Two trained facilitators guide the group in consultation with a clergyperson. For eight weeks, group participants meet for 90 minutes on Tuesday evenings. A workbook provides questions for reflection as well as exercises that will help you define a new relationship with your loved one through Christ. As a group you will sort out feelings brought about by the death of your loved ones and together find a renewed joy in each of your lives. Individuals have benefited from the program even if years have passed since the death. There is no time limit on grief. Weekly sessions start on Tuesday, September 25, at 7:00 p.m. in the Lower Division Library, upstairs at the Orleans campus; the last session is on Tuesday, November 13. For information and registration, contact Kathleen Moore at 221.6253; Jan Elliott at 243.0700; or the Rev. Randy Hehr at 259.1570.

Wednesday Nights at St. John's
(Rudisill Parish Hall)
Tonight the group continues a new DVD series on the travels of Paul titled "The Apostle Paul and the Earliest Churches." This brilliant and illuminating production follows Paul's missionary journeys on Anatolian soil (modern Turkey). It presents a diverse treasury of mosaics, frescoes, statues, amphitheaters, agoras, temples, and more. The historical, religious, and archaeological background of each region in which Paul preached the gospel is shown. The film is enhanced by maps and footage of cities important to Paul's ministry. All are welcome to join in the covered dish dinner, DVD viewing, and group discussion.

Friday, August 24 The Feast of St. Bartholomew
|
Feast Day Facts: Bartholomew is one of the twelve Apostles known to us only by his being listed among them in the Gospels. He is sometimes identified with Nathanael, the friend of Philip, in John's Gospel, to whom Jesus promised the vision of angels ascending and descending on the Son of Man. Nothing more is heard of him in the four Gospels. Some sources credit Bartholomew with having written a Gospel, but if he did, it is lost to us. Despite the fact that we know so little about him, his feast day has been a traditional occasion for markets and fairs, such as the Bartholomew Fair held in London since the Middle Ages and which served as the scene for Ben Jonson's homonymous comedy.
