Rudisill Parish Hall Floor Refinishing

A reminder that as part of our summertime sprucing of the physical plant, the parish hall floor will be refinished this week.  Please note that no classes or meetings can be held there during this time.  The project is planned for completion by Saturday, July 21.

Reverend Sánchez's Visit
We were so pleased to welcome Father Sandino Sánchez to St. John's this past Sunday to visit and to preach.  Refreshments were served in Rudisill Parish Hall between the 9:00 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. services and parishioners got to meet Fr. Sánchez and learn more about his home in the Dominican Republic and our church's outreach work there.

What's New in the Sacristy?

Next time you are in the church before or after a service, please visit the sacristy and notice the framed copy of the National Altar Guild Prayer, which Peggy Curlin brought to St. John's from the Province IV Altar Guild Conference that she attended in Kanuga last month.

This prayer is a reminder that serving in the Altar Guild is a ministry and not just "doing a job."  The prayer captures the holiness of preparing for the Eucharist as well as partaking of the Eucharist and is an inspiration for each of us.  Thank you to Peggy for this meaningful gift!

Wednesday Nights at St. John's

Alternate location for this week is

Peterson Room on the School's Middle Division Campus (due to the floor refinishing in Rudisill Parish Hall)

Following a shared potluck dinner, Diana & Jack Overton will present the continuation of a series on parables, including a short DVD movie, commentary by the Overtons, and discussion by the group.

When Jesus taught about life's toughest issues, he used short, simple stories. Rob Bell's modern "parables" on film follow his lead, featuring concise, powerful 10- to 14-minute DVDs.  Wherever he went, whatever he did, Jesus started discussions about what matters most, because for Jesus, God is always inviting us to open our eyes and join in.

Monday, July 23: The Feast of St. Mary
Feast Day Facts:  Mary of Magdala was one of several women who followed Jesus and ministered to him in Galilee, after he cast seven demons from her.  It is clear that Mary's life was radically changed by Jesus' healing of her.  Her ministry of service and steadfast companionship, even as a witness to the crucifixion, has been an example of the faithful ministry of women to Christ through the centuries.  All four Gospels name Mary as one of the women who went to the tomb to mourn and to care for Jesus' body.  Her weeping for the loss of her Lord strikes a common chord with all who have experienced such a loss.  Jesus' tender response to her grief made her the first witness to the risen Lord.

One tradition concerning Mary Magdalene says that following the death and resurrection of Jesus, she gained an invitation to a banquet given by Tiberius.  When she met him, she held a plain egg in her hand and exclaimed, "Christ is risen!"  Caesar laughed, and said that Christ rising from the dead was as likely as the egg in her hand turning red while she held it.  Before he finished speaking, the egg turned bright red, and she continued proclaiming the Gospel to the entire imperial house.

St. John's will celebrate the Feast of Mary Magdalene with a 12:15 p.m. Eucharist in the chapel on Monday. Join us to honor this strong woman of the early church!
