News
Happy Independence Day!
Please note, the parish offices will be closed for the Independence Day holiday today, Wednesday, July 4, and tomorrow, Thursday, July 5.
Independence Day and the Church
Proper Psalms, Lessons, and Prayers were first appointed for this national observance in the Proposed Prayer Book of 1786.  They were deleted, however, by the General Convention of 1789, primarily as a result of the intervention of Bishop William White.  Though himself a supporter of the American Revolution, he felt that the required observance was inappropriate, since the majority of the Church's clergy had, in fact, been loyal to the British crown.  Believe it or not, it was not until the revision of 1928 that provision was again made for the liturgical observance of the day.

The prayer for today from Lesser Feasts and Fasts is as follows:
Lord God Almighty, in whose Name the founders of this country won liberty for themselves and for us, and lit the torch of freedom for nations then unborn; Grant that we and all the people of this land may have grace to maintain our liberties in righteousness and peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.  Amen.

Rudisill Parish Hall Floor Refinishing

As part of our summertime sprucing of the physical plant, the parish hall floor will be refinished during the week of July 16.  Please note that no classes or meetings can be held there during this time.  The project will be complete by Saturday, July 21.

Events
Reverend Sandino Sánchez Visit: July 15
On Sunday, July 15, we will welcome, as our guest preacher at all three services, the Reverend Canon Sandino Sánchez from the Dominican Republic.  Fr. Sanchez is known by many St. John's parishioners who have been involved in our diocese's companion relationship with the Dominican Republic.
Fr. Sánchez is vicar of three congregations, San José, Santo Tomás, and the new mission congregation Monte de Sion (Mount Zion).  He is also rector of the San José Episcopal School and the Bishop Isaac Home for the Elderly.
Your Action Needed

Your Prayers Needed: Triennial Episcopal Convention

The triennial Convention of the Episcopal Church is meeting in Indianapolis from July 5 through July 12.  Please include in your prayers the bishops and deputies gathered for that week, asking, as we are praying during church services, that "God's Spirit may infuse their hearts and guide all their deliberations and decisions."

Candle in the Sanctuary Light Available

The candle in the sanctuary light is available on Sunday, July 29.  Please contact the parish offices at 259-1570 or parish@stjohnstampa.org if you would like to take this opportunity to worship God and support St. John's.

Faith Café Needs Clothing

Faith CafePlease make a donation of t-shirts, lightweight pants, jeans, and walking shorts in sizes L and XL, as well as running shoes, to the men of Faith Café. Donations may be brought to the parish offices. The closet at the Café is nearly empty right now and the men are in great need of hot-weather clothing as our sweltering Florida summer continues.

Join Our Taskforce to Help Create a New Informal Service cross

Adults and youth, please contact either Father Doug Remer at dremer@stjohnstampa.org or Mother Stefanie Taylor at staylor@stjohnstampa.org to join a group that is planning a new Sunday service.  The clergy and staff of St. John's would like your help and input on the service, proposed to be held at Price Chapel on the school's Middle Division campus.  The new service would be reverent but informal, would include the participation of youth in the service, and would include a variety of music.
If you would like your information to be included in next week's Scroll, please email all content by Monday at 9:00 a.m.
to Lee Lowry at LLowry@stjohnstampa.org.
