Independence Day and the ChurchProper Psalms, Lessons, and Prayers were first appointed for this national observance in the Proposed Prayer Book of 1786. They were deleted, however, by the General Convention of 1789, primarily as a result of the intervention of Bishop William White. Though himself a supporter of the American Revolution, he felt that the required observance was inappropriate, since the majority of the Church's clergy had, in fact, been loyal to the British crown. Believe it or not, it was not until the revision of 1928 that provision was again made for the liturgical observance of the day. The prayer for today from Lesser Feasts and Fasts is as follows: Lord God Almighty, in whose Name the founders of this country won liberty for themselves and for us, and lit the torch of freedom for nations then unborn; Grant that we and all the people of this land may have grace to maintain our liberties in righteousness and peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Join Our Taskforce to Help Create a New Informal Service
Adults and youth, please contact either Father Doug Remer at dremer@stjohnstampa.org or Mother Stefanie Taylor at staylor@stjohnstampa.org to join a group that is planning a new Sunday service. The clergy and staff of St. John's would like your help and input on the service, proposed to be held at Price Chapel on the school's Middle Division campus. The new service would be reverent but informal, would include the participation of youth in the service, and would include a variety of music.
