St. John's Choir Tour
Last Sunday morning, our choir sang a Festal Eucharist at St. Thomas Church, Fifth Avenue, New York City, as part of their tour to New York and Washington, D.C. The invitation to sing at St. Thomas is a rare honor.
The choir then traveled on to Washington, D.C. for two services of Choral Evensong at the National Cathedral on Monday and Tuesday, June 25 and 26. We are so proud of the accomplishments of our choir and wish them a safe return.

St. John's and Tropical Storm DebbyRest assured, though Bayshore Boulevard is still closed for debris clean-up, St. John's Church stood high and dry on Orleans Avenue throughout the flooding. This is a picture of the water on Tuesday morning, though by today it has receded almost completely. As you can see, the church rode out the storm's bands nicely. After 100 years, it takes more than a storm to halt the good work of this congregation!

Join Our Taskforce to Help Create a New Informal Service
Adults and youth, please contact either Father Doug Remer at dremer@stjohnstampa.org or Mother Stefanie Taylor at staylor@stjohnstampa.org to join a group that is planning a new Sunday service. The clergy and staff of St. John's would like your help and input on the service, proposed to be held at Price Chapel on the school's Middle Division campus. The new service would be reverent but informal, would include the participation of youth in the service, and would include a variety of music.

Friday, June 29 The Feast of Saints Peter and Paul
|
|
Feast Day Facts: The Feast of Sts. Peter and Paul is a liturgical feast in honor of the martyrdom of the apostles Peter and Paul. The saints are commemorated separately, Peter on January 18 for his confession of Jesus as the Messiah, and Paul on January 25 for his conversion, but they are commemorated together on June 29 in observance of the tradition of the Church that they both died as martyrs in Rome during the persecution under Nero in 64 AD. Paul and Peter were very different men and had many differences of opinion about the budding Church, not least being Paul's insistence on evangelizing the Gentiles, which Peter strongly opposed. However, their shared commitment to Christ and his gospel proved stronger than these differences, and led to their imprisonment in the famous Mamertine Prison of Rome, where each foresaw his approaching death. Saint Peter was crucified as his Lord was, though upside down; Saint Paul, a Roman citizen, was granted the right to be beheaded by a sword. St. John's will celebrate this feast day with a Holy Eucharist at 12:15 in the chapel.
