The Centennial Visioning Project Town Hall Meeting this Sunday
10:15 AM - Noon

As part of our celebration of the 100th Anniversary of St. John's Episcopal Church, we are pleased to announce the St. John's

Centennial Visioning Project to engage our parish in an open and inclusive discussion of several key questions regarding the future of St. John's Episcopal Church, including:

  • What kind of parish do we believe God wants us to be?
  • What specific activities and initiatives are important to us as a parish in serving God and meeting our parishioners' spiritual needs?
  • What should we enhance and what should we change about what we do on a daily basis at St. John's to facilitate a vibrant and growing parish?

The Centennial Visioning Project will be an eight month process, beginning in October 2011 and ending in May 2012, and is being led by a Leadership Group of eighteen parishioners, including Chairman Clarke Hobby, Co-Chairman Drew Graham, Donna Barrs, Katey Brown, Mary Beth Carastro, Hugh Cruse, Bill Hardy, Tim Killgoar, Steve Leal, Lionel Lowry, Lorraine Lutton, Dax Nelson, Jeremiah Pederson, Lindsey Robbins, Meg Russell, Bill Sansone, Steve Straske and Anne Voss.

The Visioning Project will run concurrently with the St. John's Centennial Celebration, and the two initiatives will offer our Parish a unique opportunity to both celebrate our past and help define our future. The Leadership Group will seek broad input and involvement from as many parishioners as possible. The Project is led by St. John's parishioners but will also utilize the services of a professional organizational consultant, Susan Steiner, PhD, who is trained in facilitating organizational development and growth. The Project seeks to be an upbeat and positive endeavor that inspires the St. John's community to think proactively about ways to improve our Church and better fulfill its mission. The Centennial Visioning Project will seek to achieve consensus within the St. John's parish for recommending and implementing a specific set of initiatives in order to increase our church membership, cultivate a more active and committed group of parishioners, and foster deeper relationships among existing church members.

The first of two Visioning Project "Town Hall Meetings" will be led by Clarke Hobby and Dr. Steiner and held on Sunday, November 13th from 10:15 AM - 12:00 PM in the Parish Hall (there will be no Adult Sunday School that Sunday so that as many parishioners as possible can attend, and it is not necessary to stay for the whole meeting if you have schedule constraints). In addition to the Town Hall meetings, we will schedule several other meetings to solicit feedback on specific areas of interest to be determined through feedback from parishioners from the Town Hall meetings and a parish-wide survey. The Leadership Group has also been charged with soliciting feedback from parishioners on ideas that will further the goals of the Centennial Visioning Project, so we are encouraging all parishioners to please communicate directly with the members of the Leadership Group about ways to help St. John's grow and flourish in the months and years ahead.

Sign Up for Angel Tree

This Sunday 11/13 and 11/20 we will be in the garth between services. Parishioners may sign up for their angels - we have 150  children this year!  We will also sign up drivers for the day of the party, enlist people to help at the party, as well as take financial donations.

Reminder - Please turn in your pledge cards by November 30th.
Please remember that we are trying to have all of our pledges in bSt. John's Centennialy the end of this month so that our Vestry can have the month of December to prepare a parish budget for next year.

St. John's Episcopal Church will be celebrating its 100th year in 2012.

The theme of the 2012 Every Member Canvass is based on scripture from Psalm 100:5

"For the Lord is good, his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations."

Your pledge enables St. John's Episcopal Church to continue to fulfill its mission- which began almost 100 years ago.

Please send in your pledge card by November 30.

St. John's Choir CDs and Burgert Brothers Calendars Make Great Christmas Gifts (available in the church office.)

"Magnificat," St. John's Choir's latest CD, has been released. It is a recording of this year's Benefit Concert that has been edited for CD, and features settings of the Magnificat of different musical genres, interspersed with organ solos played by Simon Morley and Simon Jacobs, who accompanied the concert. We are particularly grateful to Eric Stoll who, as well as singing in the performance, acted as recording engineer and producer, and has done an outstanding job. Thanks are due also to Sharon Stoll, who obtained copyright permission from publishers and performing rights. The CD is available through the Parish Office, 259.1570, and is priced at $15.  CDs are also available for purchase at www.shop.stollandson.com.

The 2012 Burgert Brothers Calendar has been printed and St. John's Church (1926) is the featured photograph for the month of April.  Donate $15 to the St. John's Centennial Celebration fund and receive this annual Tampa treasure.

The F.A.T.H.E.R.S. Camping Trip Continues to Court Compliments

Many a child could be heard exclaiming, "this was the best camping trip ever!" this past Saturday morning.  As the embers of the night's campfires smoked, the dads there present could be seen breaking down their tents, sharing warm conversation and playing with their kids.  Most were tired and a bit disheveled but impressed once again by the profoundly positive impact that this simple family sojourn had on their kids.  (Fathers Attuned To Healthy Enduring Relationships & Spirituality)

"Not a Fan" with discussion following.

Presenting "Not a Fan," a new small group DVD study from City on a Hill Productions, wich contains the following description:

Twenty times in the New Testament, Jesus issued a compelling and challenging invitation to Follow Him. He's not interested in mere fans. He doesn't want enthusiastic admirers. He wants Completely Committed Followers. Based on the engaging approach of Kyle Idleman, this one-of-a-kind small group study examines what it means to deny one's self and truly follow Jesus.

This unconventional small group experience is a cinematic journey through a series of six mini-movies providing a unique perspective to help shape today's believer into a first century Christ-follower.
Follow the journey of Eric Nelson, a man leading a compartmentalized triple life as a pleasure-seeking rebel, a cutthroat corporate executive, and a nominal Christian. When confronted with a near death experience, Eric embarks on a spiritual journey that transforms his commitment to Jesus Christ and tests the faith of his friends and family.

Contemporary Women's Bible Study

BibleCWBS meets in the Peterson Room at the Plant Avenue Campus (St. John's Middle School).

The fall session of the Contemporary Women's Bible Study (CWBS) began on Tuesday, September 27th with the Gospel of John, and will run through the middle of March when we will begin a study of the book of Isaiah. Although we will be using the Interpretation Bible Studies series, we will be reading all of the chapters, not just those covered in the study guides.

All women of St. John's (and their friends) are invited to join this dynamic group for prayer, lively discussion, faith and fellowship. After a light breakfast, scripture and selected topics of interest are explored in new and creative ways, led by rotating facilitators.  Whether you are an introvert or an extrovert, appreciate the big picture or delight in detail, this fresh approach to Bible study offers interesting and inspiring insights for everyone as we ponder its meaning for our lives.

If you are new to CWBS and do not have an entry code for the Middle School, contact Kathleen Moore at 813.221.6253 or kathleenmarymoore@gmail.com.  We will need to make arrangements for someone to meet you and show you how to get into the building.

The Women's Mid-day Bible Study

Bible

We will gather in the John Peterson Adult Education Room on the third floor of the Middle School campus, 240 Plant Ave., to continue our study of John's Gospel.  The  Rev. Kathy Conner of First Presbyterian Church will guide us. We will be studying John 20:1-31, "The First Resurrection Appearance."

We invite all interested women to join us.  Each session is meaningful and enlightening, so your inability to attend every session need not be an obstacle.

If you would like to participate in a sandwich and salad lunch at a cost of $5, please email Joan McKay at mckayjhm@aol.com .  You are also welcome to bring your lunch or eat at another time, in which case no advance notice is needed.  We look forward to welcoming you.

Open Choir Rehearsal

We will hold an open rehearsal here at St. John's as part of our recruitment drive for boy and girl choristers.

We live in an age in which, for many reasons, chorister recruitment has never been harder. We currently have a good and loyal group of boys and girls, but we cannot take it for granted that they will always be there.

Do come along on Thursday 17th, and think about any families you know that have children who may like to join us and encourage them to come. It may well be fun for our own congregation to see what we get up to in rehearsals as we prepare pieces for services and concerts. All are welcome.
