St. John's Proudly Launches Its New Website

Parish Breakfast a Sumptous Success
- Lee Lowry

Dave Kenyon and his kitchen team were assisted by the children and youth for one of our best Parish Breakfasts yet! Granola pancakes, apple crisp and baked ham, as well as fruit smoothies, cereal and the ever-popular Krispy Kreme donuts were the delicious fare as the kids served food, helped as cashiers, bussed tables and did dishes.

Many parish members attended and enjoyed food and fellowship between the 9:00 and 11:15 services. A large crew also was on hand to help assemble sandwiches for Faith Café through our Sandwich Sunday ministry. The homemade "kids crunch" trail mix, assembled by the youth and children, was a healthy addition to the lunch bags for the hungry folks at the Café.

Contemporary Women's Bible Study

BibleCWBS meets in the Peterson Room at the Plant Avenue Campus (St. John's Middle School).

The fall session of the Contemporary Women's Bible Study (CWBS) began on Tuesday, September 27th with the Gospel of John, and will run through the middle of March when we will begin a study of the book of Isaiah. Although we will be using the Interpretation Bible Studies series, we will be reading all of the chapters, not just those covered in the study guides.

All women of St. John's (and their friends) are invited to join this dynamic group for prayer, lively discussion, faith and fellowship. After a light breakfast, scripture and selected topics of interest are explored in new and creative ways, led by rotating facilitators.  Whether you are an introvert or an extrovert, appreciate the big picture or delight in detail, this fresh approach to Bible study offers interesting and inspiring insights for everyone as we ponder its meaning for our lives.

If you are new to CWBS and do not have an entry code for the Middle School, contact Kathleen Moore at 813.221.6253 or kathleenmarymoore@gmail.com.  We will need to make arrangements for someone to meet you and show you how to get into the building.

St. John's Choir Releases New CD

St. John's Choir Releases New CD

"Magnificat", St. John's Choir's latest CD, has been released this week. It is a recording of this year's Benefit Concert that has been edited for CD, and features settings of the Magnificat of different musical genres, interspersed with organ solos played by

Simon Morley and Simon Jacobs, who accompanied the concert. We are particularly grateful to Eric Stoll who, as well as singing in the performance, acted as recording engineer and producer, and has done an outstanding job. Thanks are due also to Sharon Stoll, who obtained copyright permission from publishers and performing rights. The CD is available through the Parish Office, 259.1570, and is priced at $15.

Faithful to all Generations

2011 Every Member Canvass

St. John's Episcopal Church will be celebrating its 100th year in 2012.

"For the Lord is good, his steadfast love endures
forever, and his faithfulness to all generations."

Your pledge enables St. John's Episcopal Church to continue to fulfill its mission- which began almost 100 years ago.

Please send in your pledge card.

Thank you,
The Every Member Canvass

Request

Special Request From Bishop Masereka Christian Foundation:

One of the students that members of St. John's have sponsored in the past has now graduated from Secondary School and has been accepted into a 2-1/2 year nursing program that starts in November, but he will not be able to attend unless someone (or some group of people) is willing to sponsor him for the two and a half years.  The student's name is Morris Bwambale.  He has been living with his grandmother, who is so poor she cannot possibly do anything to help him.  Last year his sponsor paid extra to buy kerosene for the grandmother so she could cook and have light for Morris to study.

  • The nursing program where Morris has been accepted costs $1350.00 per year.  This includes housing and meals.
  • It takes two and a half years to complete this nursing course.
  • The school is two hours away from where Morris lives, so he would have to live away from his grandmother during that time.  He would return to Kasese during semester breaks to be with her.
  • There is an additional one-time fee of $400.00 to pay for a stethoscope, uniforms, and other supplies needed by a nursing student.

If there is anyone who is willing to take on this two-and-a-half year commitment, please contact Peggy Curlin at  pcurlin@verizon.net.  I am hoping that some small group at St. John's - or someone's place of work, or a civic club - will be able to pool their resources and help this young man get the training that will enable him to support himself and his grandmother, and that will also allow him to be of service to the people of Uganda.
