The first holiday of the summer is coming up - Memorial Day. I know, technically, it is still spring but for women Memorial Day allows us to wear white pants and white shoes. At least that's what our grandmother's told us. I don't know about you, but my grandmother was the Queen. If she said no white shoes until after the Memorial Day parade, you didn't wear white shoes.
I grew up in Goshen CT (home of the World Famous Goshen Fair)- a small town where the local Memorial Day parade kicks off the "season" every year. The town comes alive with the marching band, fire department, scouts and of course the town leaders all marching through town. New Yorkers make the trek to the country to open up their summer homes and the lakes are once again alive with boats, kayakers and swimmers.
As a child it also meant that the summer vacation was almost here and also the first picnic - hot dogs, hamburgers, watermelon and of course s'mores.
This year I'm headed to Lime Rock Park on Memorial Day for the Grand Am Road Racing featuring the Daytona prototypes. No, I'm not a car geek, Nascar fan or need for speed kind of girl - but it sounded like fun, so why not!
Perhaps I'll love it and it will be a new family tradition!
