Greetings!
The Dangers of Ivermectin Poisoning
If you
read our newsletter last week, you are acutely aware
of the dangers of Ivermectin Poisoning. One of our very own adopted pups
Lucy, just
recently suffered from a lethal dose of Ivomec. Luckily we retrieved her
in
time to get her the medical attention she needed. I'm happy to report Lucy made a
100%
recovery and was adopted out to another caring family.
After that traumatic episode, we thought it would be a really good idea to
write this
newsletter on Ivermectin Poisoning.
Ivermectin is an antiparasitic medication
commonly used to
control heartworms. It works by causing neurologic damage to the
parasite,
resulting in paralysis and death.
Ivermectin is the main ingredient in prescription
heartworm
medications like Heartgard, prescribed by your Vet.
There are however, similar products containing
the drug
ivermectin which are approved for use in cattle, horses and other large
animals. Ivomec, for example, is one of them. It contains ivermectin but
at a much
higher level of concentration. Since it is the same drug but costs way less,
some
people choose to use this product on their dog, in an effort to reduce pet costs. And
this is where the problem really occurs: administering too high a
dosage
and causing toxicity.
Ivomec warning: This product should not be used
in other
animal species as severe adverse reactions, including fatalities in
dogs, may
result.
Also, there are
certain dog breeds (herding breeds especially) Collies and Sheepdogs
that
cannot tolerate Ivermectin, the drug in Ivomec.
Bottom line: Never administer any drug to your dog
without first
seeking counsel from your Veterinarian.
Only under the guidance of your Veterinarian
should you
administer Ivomec to your dog.It is not made for
dogs and even the smallest dosage error could be lethal.
Symptoms of Ivermectin Poisoning
Symptoms of ivermectin poisoning include dilated
pupils,
stumbling around, weakness, tremors,
vomiting, drooling, unwillingness to
eat, blindness, coma, and death!
When used properly,
through prescriptions from your Vet, ivermectin
is considered safe as an effective
heartworm preventative.

Our Mission |
Rescuing, caring and finding good loving homes for dogs and cats is not an easy task, but a very rewarding one.
The animals we rescue are fostered in our own homes where we can better care for them and give them the love and attention they need and, in many cases, were never given.
Our goal is to find the perfect "forever" loving family for each one of them. Could it be yours?
We count on the generosity of donations to continue our work. No dollar amount is too small. All donations help with vet bills, food, and medication.
We thank you for your Support.

Vaccines
Although exact protocols are still debated, it is now known that certain vaccines such as distemper and rabies, don't need to be given yearly after initial doses and booster.
Check with your vet and don't just go for the shots. Pets age faster than we do. Regular visits allow for early detection of problems.
