Dear Log Rolling Friends and Family,

It is our goal as an association to make sure information is readily available to all members.  Information can always be found on our website: http://www.uslogrolling.com
and of course in our newsletters!  This newsletter has links to important rules and ranking information.  I encourage all of you to take a moment to read over these rules and for the professionals, to take a look at the new ranking system for 2010.  We encourage you to start thinking of improvements for both the rules and ranking system as a survey will be sent out at the end of the season.  Also, USLRA is always looking for committee and board members, so please start thinking about how you can help out for 2010!

As always, I've been having the time of my life with my log rolling "family" this summer, and am in disbelief at how fast time is flying by!  I wish all of you the best of luck at the World Championships and in the last few tournaments of the summer season.  I look forward to seeing everybody in Hayward!

Sincerely,
Shana Martin

USLRA Log Rolling and Boom Running Ranking Changes

Below are the changes made for the 2010 season based on feedback from USLRA members.  Thank you all for your detailed responses!

Log Rolling:
Tiebreak Rule for World Standings Lists:
1.  The competitor who has placed the highest at the sanctioned World Championships.
2.  If the competitors have had any head-to-head matches during the season, whoever has won more times will earn the higher ranking.
3.  The competitor who has placed the highest at a level 2, and if there are none, then a level 3 with the highest number of competitors in the top 12.
* Definition of an open tournament:  Available for anyone to enter with elite status or U17 competitors who have placed third or higher in the U17 or Semi-Pro divisions at the previous ILRA World Championships may also compete in the Elite division at any sanctioned event except the ILRA World Championships and US Nationals.
* An athlete must win at least one match at any tournament (open or invitational) to earn points.
* If there is only ONE (1) Level 1 tournament, which will be the World Championships, then the top 4 competitors from the official tournament results will be guaranteed an invitation to any Invitational tournaments the following season.  Seeding for the Invitational will be based on the ranking system, which is figured on an athlete's top 3 results during the season.
* If an athlete sustains a season ending injury prior to the first Level 1 tournament, they may turn in an appeal with a doctor's letter on clinic letterhead to the Medical Review Board (3 members) to determine if their points will be frozen from the previous year with moving back one place in the WRL for the following season.

Boom Running:
* Tiebreak Rule for World Standings Lists:
1.  The competitor who has placed the highest at the sanctioned World Championships.
2.  The competitor who places the highest at a level 2, and if there are none, then a level 3 with the highest number of competitors in the top 12.
* Definition of an open tournament:  Available for anyone to enter age 16 and up.
* In all open tournaments, an athlete needs to beat at least one competitor to earn points.
* In invitational tournaments, the bottom 25% of competitors will not earn points.  The number earning points will always round up to the next whole competitor.

4th Annual Minnesota State Championships
Log Rolling, Speed Birling, & Boom Run Tournament

Shana and Mom

Hello all log rollers!
I hope you are having a fun summer competition season!  Most of you already received information in the USLRA e-newsletter, but I wanted to update you with more info regarding the Minnesota State Log Rolling, Speed Birling, and Boom Running tournament to be held in Grand Marais, MN Aug. 1st & 2nd.  This event was a huge success last year and we are very excited to bring it back again in 2009!  It is part of Grand Marais' annual festival, Fisherman's Picnic, which attracts people from all over the country.  The exposure for log rolling is incredible!  The Lions Club, Central Boiler, Wood-Mizer, Husqvarna, and Wildfire Protection Systems are sponsoring the event which allows us to have the lowest entry fee of any tournament on the schedule in addition to GREAT competitor bags, fun prizes, appreciation for our volunteers, a complimentary pancake breakfast, over $3200 in prize money and cool awards, and 2 chainsaws for the winners of elite log rolling!  WOW!  We hope you join us on the north shore and have some fun!  There are a lot of great things planned throughout the weekend.
for everything scheduled for Fisherman's Picnic and www.grandmarais.com for more general information about the community.  The start time for youth on Saturday is 11am as many of you might be traveling to Grand Marais that day.  Elite start time is 2pm.  With NEW sponsorship we now have $2500 in elite prize money paying through 8th place for each division......$175 + chainsaw, $225, $200, $175, $125, $125, $100, & $100.  With a strong showing of competitors last year, the tournament and excitement around town is growing for this year.  We have worked hard to make it even better.  With 3 new sponsors on board, a good turnout from the elite and amateurs this year will greatly impact the future potential for the event in hopes of becoming a level 1 or 2.  Please fill up your cars and encourage others to come!  The youth log rolling team has started in Grand Marais and kids still talk about the amazing log rolling & boom running they watched last year!  A local girl has even entered 2 out of town tournaments including the World Championships.  The "Atkinson Garage Lodge" has a nice shiny, new floor this year!  All log rolling friends are welcome to stay (we have beds, couches, and bed pads for 10), but floor space for many more.  If staying, please volunteer to help with the tournament......THANK YOU!

There is also a Husqvarna stock saw contest Friday night at 7pm for anyone experienced in running chainsaws with $500 in prize money & a new chainsaw for 1st place.  The fee is $20 for pre-entry and $30 for same day with a great competitor bag valued at over $30.  Let me know if you are interested or plan on entering.

On Saturday, at noon, there are various community crosscut sawing contests (men, women, jack-n-jill, double buck, jill-n-jill) that are a lot of fun and certainly entertaining to watch!  Most elite rollers and/or parents did it last year and laughed all afternoon.  I'm certain there were some champions amongst us!  There is no entry fee besides a button, a saw is provided, the wood is small, and the prizes are usually cool gift certificates around town.

New this year is an adult axe throwing contest at 1pm on Saturday.  The entry fee is $2 with a "Fisherman's Picnic" button.  Bring your axe or use one of ours.

Did I mention there are delicious restaurants, the biggest Great Lake just a stones throw away, super cool fireworks Saturday night at 10pm with the best surprise private seats in town, plus SO MANY other fun things to do during Fisherman's Picnic?  Come and find out!

On Sunday we are having a FREE flapjack breakfast & elite and youth boom running tournament at our house.  Breakfast is at 8:30am and booming practice starts at 9:30am.  The competition begins at 10:30am.  We have 2 awesome booms, 4 docks, and "Aruba the wonder dog" who is excited to see her boom running friends again!  We will run 2 different formats (world cup & traditional) and also have some spike shoes for kids to use if needed.  All ages and abilities are welcome to attend!  There will be over 300 spectators on hand as a fundraiser for the Gunflint Fire Department.  It will be a blast!
As always, volunteers are needed to run the tournament.....PLEASE let us know how you can HELP!  It is fun to be involved and all the rollers & spectators are grateful beyond belief!  We will need 3 youth & elite judges, a bracket person, boom timers, announcing, and equipment tear down Saturday night.  Instead of hiring this out, we put the money towards the prize purse.  Lets pull together and show the North Shore how cool a log rolling & speed birling tournament is once again!  Your efforts are greatly appreciated!
On behalf of the community of Grand Marais, The Lions Club, Central Boiler, Wood-Mizer, Husqvarna, and Niel & I, we thank you for supporting the Minnesota State Championships!  We look forward to seeing you soon!   Call or email with any questions.
