Adventure on the Appalachian Trail

Pr. Mark Holmes, Mt. Olivet Lutheran Church, Perry, IA

I had backpacked several sections of the Appalachian Trail before, so I wasn't surprised when Pastor Bill Bernau asked me to lead a group of pastors for a week.   What did surprise me was that we would use this hike as an opportunity for continuing education where we would be studying the "mountain-top faith stories".

Our adventure began following worship on Sunday, July 29th.   We took two days to drive to Pearisburg, Virginia where we spent the night at Woods Hole Hostel before starting this epic journey into the wilderness.

Alleviate Childhood Hunger through Hope for the Hungry

Pr. Diana Sickles, Founder and Director, Coalition in Support of Hungry Children

At the 2009 Southeastern Iowa Synod Assembly, the voting members unanimously voted to alleviate childhood hunger in the Synod by 2015 in conjunction with the United Nations and the United States goals. A copy of the resolution can be accessed on the synod's website.  The Synod has also for the last four years partnered with the Coalition in Support of Hungry Children in their annual event held to work on achieving this goal.  The event is Hope for the Hungry.

Glocal Mission Gathering:  November 2-3
Faith Lutheran Church, Clive, IA

        glocal

God's work in mission always propels us to encounter the neighbor, particularly in the stranger. Glocal Mission Gatherings equip us for God's work in today's global and local realities and their "glocal" intersections. So what is mission? Who is the neighbor? Let's answer these questions together for our migrating and immigrating world.

Information about the Glocal Mission Gathering will be arriving in congregation mailboxes soon.

ELCA Thrivent Fellowships for Adult Youth Workers

Have you heard of The Extravaganza? The Extravaganza is an annual 4-day conference that draws together anywhere from 500-750 adults who work with youth in congregations of the ELCA for the premier renewal, education and networking event.  It is for the professional and the volunteer.

Through the generosity of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, Thrivent will again be offering "Thrivent Fellowships" for this year's Extravaganza.  Thrivent Fellowships are an opportunity to provide support to youth ministers who would benefit from participation in the Extravaganza and an opportunity to connect with youth ministers who share similar ministry foci.  For more information, or to apply, please visit the
Fellowships home page.
