The internship, under the direct supervision of Pastor Eric Carlson, Assistant to the Bishop, will provide a glimpse of the whole church through the lens of synod ministry. In addition to experiencing a variety of opportunities through the Office of the Bishop, Kelsey will participate in the Vision Trip to the Pare Diocese, Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania in June, volunteering at the 2012 ELCA Youth Gathering in July, and providing leadership at the Wholly Iowa Youth Leadership Discipling Event (WIYLDE) at the end of July. Draft Social Statement on Criminal Justice
Now Being Studied-Hearings Scheduled
Pr. Paul Ostrem, Assistant to the Bishop
Congregations throughout the ELCA are studying or making plans to study the draft social statement on criminal justice. The draft statement, authorized by the 2007 Churchwide Assembly, is now available for study by individuals and groups in congregations or other ministry settings. A response form is available at the end of the statement to provide to the task force comment and reaction to their work. Responses must be in to the task force by October 31, 2012. The task force will then work on a revision (in recent social statements 30-40% of the draft statement has been revised in response to comments received through hearings and the response forms) which will ultimately be referred to the ELCA Church Council which will make the decision whether or not to recommend it to the 2013 Churchwide Assembly.
This synod's Commission for Church in Society has made plans for two hearings on the social statement this coming fall. The first will be Saturday, September 22 from 10am - Noon at the Synod Center for Ministry in Iowa City. The second hearing will be Sunday, September 23 from 3 - 5pm at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Ames. This immediately precedes the beginning of the Fall Theological Conference. Watch the E-News for further details.
The draft statement, a summary, and an FAQ document may be downloaded for free
http://www.ELCA.org/What-We-Believe/Social-Issues/Social-Statements-in-Process/Criminal-Justice.aspx. This link also provides information needed to order copies for a fee. The study-response-revision process of dealing with social statements in the ELCA encourages participation by the members of this church. Pastors and congregational leaders are encouraged to make this draft statement available to members and study groups for discussion and response.
