Pr. Eric Carlson, Assistant to the Bishop

The 2012 ELCA Youth Gathering, a unique community in size and scope, serves as a distinctive sign of the ELCA's evangelical mission as it works with synods and congregations to accompany young people in their faith journey to understand their vocation and articulate their faith in Jesus Christ. The Gathering will be held July 18-22, 2012 in New Orleans, LA.  Over 930 youth and adults will be attending the Gathering from the Southeastern Iowa Synod.   Read More

Holy Week Worship for Rostered Leaders

Rostered leaders are reminded that Bishop Burk invites you to take time to gather with your colleagues for a service of Holy Communion on Monday of Holy Week, April 2, at 11:00 am. Whether this is among the busiest days of the year or a much needed day of sabbath rest, this once-a-year gathering is for the sake of nourishing the servants who regularly offer nourishment to the people of God.

We will worship at St. John's Lutheran Church in Grinnell.  As in previous years, this service will include the affirmation of vocational promises. While this service of Word and Sacrament will provide nourishment for the week ahead, especially the Three Days, time with colleagues is also nourishing. So please consider remaining after worship for lunch at St John's. Lunch will be provided for $5 (or a donation of your choosing). If you plan to stay for lunch, please RSVP to receptionist@seiasynod.org no later than Wednesday, March 28.

Mission Investment Fund Grants
Pr. Paul Ostrem, Assistant to the Bishop

Mission Investment Fund Grants are available to congregations with investments for at least one year in the Mission Investment Fund of the ELCA. Grants awarded in this program range from $5000 to $25,000 and must be matched by the local congregation.  Two congregations in the Southeastern Iowa Synod were recently notified that they will receive Mission Investment Fund matching grants to assist them with capital projects which will improve energy efficiency for their facilities.  Read More

World Malaria Day Resources
ELCA World Hunger E-News

Malaria kills 800,000 people each year, most of whom are children under 5.   Raise awareness about this preventable and treatable disease by observing World Malaria Day on Sunday, April 29, 2012.  Below are some ideas for congregations.

  • Screen the five-minute ELCA Malaria

    Campaign video with your congregation.
(A shorter version is on its way!)
  • Conduct a Bible study on malaria by using
the ELCA Malaria Campaign Bible Study Leader Guide.
  • Share an ELCA Malaria Campaign
    bulletin insert
    .
  • Start a fundraising campaign in your congregation on April 29.
Use ELCA Malaria Campaign offering envelopes to collect your offerings.
  • Order and sell ELCA Malaria Campaign buttons to raise money for the campaign, or distribute them to the entire congregation

Synod Assembly Resolutions
Pr. Eric Carlson, Assistant to the Bishop

One avenue of access for congregations, conferences, synod organizational units and voting members to address issues and propose a plan for action is through a resolution. Resolutions help organize the work of the assembly by clarifying important issues or concerns. Resolutions may be submitted until 45 days prior to the first day the assembly meets.  For the 2012 Synod Assembly, resolutions must be in the synod office by Tuesday, April 17, 2012. For more information as to writing a resolution, click here.
