Find Somebody to Love: Mission in Joplin, MO Pr. Rob Dotzel, University of Iowa Lutheran Campus Ministry
 | University of Iowa Lutheran Campus Ministry students aid in recovery efforts in Joplin, MO.
| Late in the afternoon on Sunday, May 22, 2011 an EF5 tornado swooped down upon the city of Joplin, Missouri, changing lives in that community forever. Seven thousand homes and businesses were destroyed and countless others were severely damaged. The death toll would eventually reach 160, with nearly 1,000 seriously injured. The image that comes to mind as I think about that day is the closing scene from the Coen bothers' film, A Serious Man, in which a giant tornado descends upon a stunned group of high school students to the pounding beat of Jefferson Airplane and the words, "You better find somebody to love."

Ecumenical Advocacy Days
Kate Gaskill, Director for ELCA Grassroots Advocacy and Communication
You are invited to the tenth annual Ecumenical Advocacy Days, held in Washington, D.C, where hundreds of Christians will explore economy, livelihoods, and our national priorities. For four days (March 23-26) we will worship side-by-side, hear from theologians and policy experts, equip ourselves to speak confidently on key policy issues, and take our message to our elected officials in Congress. As Lutherans, we believe that government can be God's gift to allow us live together peacefully, and we will explore this together and enjoy fellowship at breakout points during the conference.
Consider this your personal invitation to come to Washington and be heard! Register now at http://advocacydays.org/registration/.
Money tight? We understand, and to help more people attend, the ELCA is providing scholarships. Deadlines are fast-approaching, so apply TODAY by filling out this application: http://elcaadvocacy.wufoo.com/forms/elca-scholarship-ecumenical-advocacy-days/

Register Now for Congregational Leadership Series May 8 -11, 2012 in Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, and Quad Cities
Religion today is often one piece of a busy life, perhaps impacting one's 'soul' or 'heart' as a means of coping with the hectic pace of the rest of life, where other values rule. For most people, love of neighbor may rule the soul, but love of a bargain rules in shopping, love of self-interest rules at the polls, and love of taste and beauty rules in the arts. As a result, most churches have accepted the demotion to one sphere of life-tending to 'spiritual' aspects of life where love of God rules.
The 2012 Congregational Leadership Series seeks to counter this reduction of faith. Read More |
