DMA Forum for Denver Mayoral Candidates

Denver Mayoral Candidates Michael Hancock and Chris Romer have both stated their support for issues of professional musicians. For this reason the DMA has refrained from making any endorsement in this race. Appropriately, we have invited both candidates to speak directly to you.

Our last e-bulletin included a letter to DMA members from Chris Romer. This week we are thankful for a statement of support from Michael Hancock.

Letter from Michael Hancock

Pete Vriesenga, President
Denver Musicians Association
1165 Delaware St.
Denver, CO  80204

Dear Pete,

Michael HancockMusic has always been part of my life. Growing up poor in North Denver, I have appreciated the wealth and variety of professional music offerings Denver enjoys....from Boettcher Concert Hall to the Pepsi Center, my family and I truly "get" the music scene.

My wife, Mary Louise, is a professional musician....so we know firsthand how musicians struggle to make a living, while giving pleasure to thousands. I am aware of the concerns Denver's professional musicians have in the face of orchestral budget cuts, and I look forward to working with you to ensure that Denver's fine musicians command the compensation they deserve. As Mayor, I will initiate discussions, locally and regionally, to review arts and culture public funding policies, to ensure that fair competitive practices are maintained.

Please take a look at my arts platform at www.hancockfordenver.com: I know you will agree that my plan will ensure the ongoing expansion of Denver's vibrant cultural scene, and address issues of fairness and investing in our creative capital.

Please join Mary Louise and me on Thursday June 2, 5:30 pm at the Plus Gallery, where we will have a Meet and Greet for the arts community and discuss the challenges and promises for a healthy Hancock Cultural Industry.

I would very much appreciate your vote for me. Michael Hancock, in Denver's mayoral runoff.

Michael B. Hancock
Candidate for Mayor of Denver

"Boulder's Pay-to-Play Orchestra" Bumps DMA Web Ratings

By Pete Vriesenga

I wrote a story for the April 29 E-Bulletin entitled "Boulder's pay-to-play orchestra lands another gig," Once again I was simply covering the ongoing adventures of the Boulder Symphony Orchestra (formerly the Niwot Timberline Orchestra) that reveal BSO's mismanagement and abuse of public funds. As human nature and marketing studies repeatedly demonstrate, it's nearly impossible to look away from a train wreck.
Google Analytics
The chart to the right is specific to the DMA website (www.dmamusic.org) and shows that the site received 3,503 Visits and 9,080 during the previous month. The first spike (to 280 Visits) came on May 9, which is the day when this story became the #1 entry page to the website (after the homepage). 70.83% of this traffic were logged by Google as new, 1st-time visitors.

One statistic is even more compelling: With 280 visits per day targeting the 'Boulder's pay-to-play orchestra' story, nobody has stepped up since to defend the behavior of the BSO or the SCFD that continues to fund them.

Everyone can't help but to look.

Orchestra's bankruptcy risks forfeit of $50M gift

That was a string attached in 2003 to Leonore Annenberg's donation.
May 22, 2011|By Peter Dobrin, Inquirer Music Critic

When Leonore Annenberg, widow of billionaire publisher Walter Annenberg, decided to give $50 million to the endowment of the Philadelphia Orchestra, she created a donor agreement stipulating in great detail how the money should be handled, and how the investment proceeds could be spent.

The 2003 gift, the largest in the orchestra's history, remains the keystone in the group's endowment, contributing up to several million dollars a year to the budget.

But turning over $50 million wasn't the end of the Annenberg Foundation's relationship with the orchestra. Although Leonore Annenberg died in 2009, the 12-page agreement bearing her signature remains in effect, and among the controls it outlines is a startling stipulation:
The foundation may ask for the money back if the orchestra files for bankruptcy.

The musicians of the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra are building a new organization. At the same time, the SSO board of trustees is overseeing the dismantling of the orchestra. The SSO filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy May 10.

Legal papers were filed last week to create Symphony Syracuse, said Jon Garland, the new organization's board of trustees chairman. Garland had chaired the musicians committee of the SSO.

It serves as a "lifeboat organization" for the 70 unemployed musicians, he said. Read On

Orchestras on Tour: Names Strike a False Note

DANIEL J. WAKIN

NY Times

Published: May 16, 2011

Every year foreign orchestras with exotic or impressive-sounding names crisscross the country. They follow grueling routes and play in arts centers, small theaters and school auditoriums in places like Pembroke, N.C., and Modesto, Calif.

But they are not always what they seem.

The Dublin Philharmonic that played two years ago in nearly 50 towns? Mostly Bulgarians. The Moscow State Radio Symphony Orchestra that toured the United States last year? Largely freelancers. The "Tschaikowski" St. Petersburg State Orchestra, which is scheduled for a major American tour next year? Even the man advertised as its principal guest conductor said he had never heard of it.  Read On

Denver Municipal BandThe Denver Municipal Band is the oldest professional concert band in the continental United States.

The Denver Municipal Band was founded in the late 1860s by Alex Sutherland, bugler at the "Charge of The Light Brigade." Surviving the ordeal, he settled in Denver where he was active in many of the city's early musical activities. Originally constituted as the GAR Post Band, it performed early municipally funded concerts throughout the 1870s and 80s, changing its name to the Denver Municipal Band in 1891 when it began its continuous history of Denver Municipal Funding.

Southern JourneyFriday, June 17 and Saturday, June 18 at 7 pm

Southern Journey is inspired by musicologist Alan Lomax's Southern Journey, a thirteen volume series of original field and studio recordings capturing the musical world of the rural South.

Experience the deep river of melody and emotion that washed the sorrow from the souls of the millions pioneering who made America strong and free -- a deep river of song that caught up the best tunes from every hand and linked them with the stubborn convictions and the most poignant longings of all the people. Southern Journey brings to life the Lomax archives with compelling authenticity, exuberance and soulfulness.  If you enjoyed the film 'Oh Brother Where Art Thou', if you've been moved by African American spirituals, or been touched by the music of Leadbelly, Robert Johnson or Woody Guthrie,  Southern Journey is a must-experience!

"This was really wonderful--great to have such a large group of musicians on stage presenting this heartfelt and soulful music in such an intimate and warm setting. The intention to share and honor the background and cultural origins of the songs was beyond entertainment as per usual." ---Carah Wertheimer

"Terrific soloists and ensemble! I loved the selection of tunes--a balance of joy, sorrow, pain and beauty. It is a particularly timely experience of authentic American folk music reflecting, speaking, singing, lamenting...the music speaks for us in these times, a reminder of those who got through it before and a salve for our own struggles--thank you!"---Susan Berman

Targeting: Improvisation with Purpose - Book release by Jason Klobnak

Targeting: Improvisation with PurposeTARGETING: IMPROVISATION WITH PURPOSE

Book Release by [DMA Member] Jason Klobnak

DENVER, COLORADO - May 23rd, 2011: Today marks the official release of a new music improvisation book, TARGETING: Improvisation With Purpose, by jazz musician, Jason Klobnak.

The book is available for sale as an E-book for $12.00 and a printed/bound book for $16.50.

TARGETING: Improvisation With Purpose can be purchased at http://jasonklobnak.digitalcontentcenter.com or at

http://jasonklobnak.wordpress.com

The focus of TARGETING: Improvisation With Purpose is to show the many different ways to creatively target notes in improvisations. The aspiring musician should have as many tools in their belt to use at any moment for a given musical situation. However, many improvisers wander aimlessly throughout their improvisations because they are not aiming at a specific target. Each chapter will look at targeting with common musical devices to help create a more effectiveimprovisation.

TARGETING: Improvisation With Purpose can be purchased through these websites:

Summer Course in the Alexander Technique at CU Boulder, 7/11-15

The 17th Annual Summer Course in the Alexander Technique at the University of Colorado at Boulder will be held July 11-15, 2011, 9:00 to noon daily. A one day Intensive will be held July 15, 1-5:00 pm. The 2011 faculty includes Ed Bilanchone, Tully Hall, and James Brody. The Alexander Technique is a powerful tool for changing habits in movement and thinking. While anyone can benefit from this Technique, the work applies especially well to musicians and educators. Participants will learn about generalized and specific body use issues that can affect both performance and educational settings, as well as practical skills for the classroom. The results of a
medical study in England that investigated the Alexander Technique were recently published in the British Medical Journal. A link to a summary of the study and a short film about it can be found at:
http://www.bmj.com/cgi/content/full/337/aug19_2/a884.

Tell Congress to Fight Online Piracy

Senate Judiciary Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-VT) has introduced new legislation to combat online piracy and copyright infringement. The Preventing Real Online Threats to Economic Creativity and Theft of Intellectual Property Act - abbreviated PROTECT IP - will allow the Department of Justice to shut down "rogue websites" that specialize in downloading, streaming, or sale of copyrighted content and counterfeit goods.

AFM is working in a broad coalition of entertainment unions, record labels, the business community, and others to support the PROTECT IP Act, S. 968. You can help by following the link below to send an email to your Senators. Tell them how important it is to protect your intellectual property online:

Attacks Aim at All Workers

May 24, 2011

The attacks on workers in dozens of states aim not just at union members, but at the entire middle class, writes Working America's Laura Clawson on Daily Kos. The assault is "massive and comprehensive, stretching from education, school lunches and child labor law to the Ryan plan to gut Medicare and Social Security, and hitting people of every age in between. Except, of course, the very (very) rich."

Trumka Declares Unions' Political Independence

May 23, 2011

In a major address at the National Press Club, AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka charted an aggressive, independent approach by the labor movement to build the power of working people in the workplace and in the political sphere.

Colorado Republican Labor Caucus

With the recent attacks on basic workers' rights across the country, union members are realizing that we must have a labor movement that is independent of any one political party. It is time to hold all politicians accountable regardless of their party affiliation. And in order to truly hold those elected officials accountable, we need to continue to act as a united front regardless of party affiliations. We are working people trying to make a living for ourselves and our families, and it will be our demise if we do not remind ourselves that WE ARE ONE. Here in Colorado, Republican union members are in the beginning stages of building a Republican Labor Caucus. During this initial phase, Republican members are reaching out to Local Union leaders with these two requests: spread the word to the general membership and ask for a Republican union member to serve as a representative on the Caucus. This involvement will help ensure that during labor 2012 we will be better prepared for what may be the fight for our lives as a labor movement. For more information e-mail republicanlabor@gmail.com

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson.
Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
