Would you like workshops in your school?
Do you have students who would be keen to join our Saturday Writing School which is free?
Would the young people you work with like to be apart of the Say What Editorial Board?
Would you like to be a part of the Youth Media Conference?
Would you like to arrange a night of fun with inspirational performers?

You make the date, we can organize for it to happen.  Our hope is that we inject young people with enthusiasm for writing all over Chicagoland. Lets do it together!

Passing The Mic, Poetry Festival

September 30 - October 1 2010

YCA students will travel to Madison for this regional poetry festival as part of the University of Wisconsin's First Wave Hip Hop Arts undergraduate program. Our students will participate in performances, workshops, and see the new work being produced by the First Wavers, many of whom are graduates from YCA's programs.  It is a wonderful celebration of education!

YOUTH MEDIA CONFERENCE FALL
WHOSE BODY IS THIS?

We have now formed a phenomenal group of youth leaders to decide and create Chicago's Youth Media Conference.  We had an inspirational training and planning session with Wide Angle Media from Baltimore where the Youth Council devised performances to go into schools, created a facebook page, and have designed publicity material.

At the next youth council meeting we will be making a promo video to take into schools and deciding on the content of the conference in relation to the theme 'Whose Body Is This'.

Next Youth Media Council Meeting:
Tuesday, September 7
YCA Offices
1180 North Milwaukee Avenue
Chicago, IL, 60642
7:00pm to 9:00pm

The deadline for teaching proposals was August 31 but if you are keen and would like to be a part of this amazing event exploring issues around the racialized, latinoized, sexualized and differently abled body in relation to media representation, please contact:

The summer months have created on excitement in the offices expanding into celebrations around the city. Former student Erica Dickerson's book launch and art exhibition at the Silver Room entitled This Side of Mourning was a collage of all the great poetic voices in the city.  Mentors and students performed together, radiating the brilliance of the creative community that expands beyond the doors of Young Chicago Authors. Erica's confidence and self-esteem being an inspiration to her peers and mentors alike.
