Member of the Month: Sheila Flox
When I was a child, I never had a weight problem. In my college years however, I learned to eat anything because of costs and a busy class schedule. I began to gain some weight but managed to stay somewhat close to what the doctor felt I should weigh. Over time though, the lack of consistent exercise, and eating on the run caught up with me. I am sure it was no coincidence that at this time my joints began to give me some pain with the increased weight gain.
Arthritis runs in my family, especially Rheumatoid Arthritis, but I was diagnosed with Osteoarthritis. My knees, back, and ankles began to ache almost daily. Life became a vicious cycle. When I would take the time to exercise, the next day I would be in so much pain that I could hardly walk. On the flip side, when I did not exercise, I saw weight gain and this in turn caused my joint pain to worsen.
Over time, I had three arthroscopic surgeries on both knees, revealing that essentially I was down to bone on bone. I began taking medicine for the joint pain, and then advanced to getting a series of shots in both knees every 6 months to provide some relief.
Four years ago, I made an effort to do something about my knee and many of my friends recommended that I join Razor Sharp. At first I just used the pools, but then over time I signed up for a trainer and I was fortunate to have Amanda Neumiller. I began to see her twice a week, and could see results with my energy levels, muscle strength, as well as weight loss over just a few months.
As time went on, I had to have a total knee replacement, and had the surgery last November. It was no picnic. In fact, it was an excruciating experience. When I was able to get around in the pool, Amanda met with me twice a week to work on the new joint. Over time the knee got much better and today is pain free! However, the other knee was also bad, so I had the second one done this past June.
Nobody wants to have pain that limits what you can do in your life. I'm very grateful to Razor Sharp for providing me with up to date equipment that is always clean and in great working order. I'm also very grateful to Amanda, and know that without all of her help, expertise, and encouragement, my knee would not have progressed as much as it has. She is a remarkable young lady, and truly an asset to Razor Sharp and its members.

Trainer Tip of the Month: No Excuses! |
|
One major excuse I hear when people say they don't exercise regularly is, "I'm too busy," or, "I don't have enough time." If this sounds like you, you may want to try to set an exercise appointment with yourself. Then at the end of the day, ask yourself if you were actually any less productive than if you had skipped your exercise appointment. I'd be willing to bet you won't miss the extra hour you took out of your day and you will feel better about yourself in the long run.
If you have a hard time holding yourself accountable, hire a personal trainer for a few sessions. You will be less likely to skip your workout because not only will you have money invested in your commitment, but there will be someone waiting for you to be there with new ideas and a great workout planned.
Think about it like this, you wouldn't miss a doctor's appointment or an important meeting with a client, so why skip your exercise appointment? Most people regret not getting a working out in, but I've never heard someone say they regret taking time out of their day to get to the gym.
No more excuses- mark it on your calendar in pen, not pencil!
