The FIDF National Gala in New York  held March 9, was unlike any event I had ever attended.

The energy and excitement in the room was contagious.  Some pledges were surprising:   a young American soldier who pledged $1000, an elderly woman dipped into her retirement savings, and a young man pledged his Bar Mitzvah money!   This event raised $20 million in support of Israeli soldiers and it was inspiring to see that so many people wanted to support the soldiers, with contributions raging from a few hundred dollars to millions.

Let's build on this success and make 2010 our biggest fundraising year yet!  Together, we can make a significant difference in the lives of Israeli soldiers!

FIDF supporters Dorit and George Alon hosted a spectacular Purim nightclub party in downtown Mountain View on Sunday night, February 28. The event featured Hollywood celebrity theme and included more than 300 FIDF supporters. Excited, boisterous, and
ready for fun, these energetic people made their way past security guards into the vibrant party scene.
Inside, guests celebrated Purim in a variety of ways. The festivities were joyful, the costumes were creative, and people danced the night away.  Dorit and George presented several surprises that captured the crowds' attention to help raise about $20,000 for our IDF soldiers. This event contributes greatly to the success of the FIDF's fundraising mission.

Many thanks to the Alons for
making this a true FIDF hit!
 The Young Leadership Division

We are excited to share the successful launch of the Friends of the IDF Young Leadership Division of the San Francisco Bay Area. On February 21, a large group met to learn about the organization.  The speaker lineup included a former IDF soldier who recently returned to the Bay Area, an American Marin who had trained in Israel, and the President and co-founder of the Los Angeles Young Leadership Division.  Seeing so much interest and excitement in the room was uplifting and invigorating. We look forward to developing a Young Leadership Division that inspires and engages the community.

Since this very successful kickoff event, we have been busy planning new events.  If you are interested in participating and becoming involved in working with this division of young people, it is not too late.  Please join us on Facebook (click here) and feel free to contact us with questions.

Friend,

This year the FIDF is off to a great start.  Since the beginning of the year,  we have gained nearly one hundred new friends, launched the Young Leadership Division, held a very successful Purim fund raising event, and successfully expanded our outreach into the various Bay Area regions.

Our goals for 2010 include planning many exciting events for the year, including missions.  Going on a mission is the ideal way to acquire a close understanding and appreciation of the important work the FIDF does to support Israeli soldiers, their families, and as a result, positively impact Israeli society.

Missions can be tailored to visit army sites of interest to a group, or to visit the projects or programs supported by the participants.  If you are interested in joining one of our Bay Area missions, or wish to join a mission with another chapter, please contact the FIDF for more information.

An interview with
Rudy Rockman

Rudy Rockman, a high school student [in photo above] who recently moved to the Bay Area, organized a party to raise funds for the FIDF while he was still living in Miami.  He raised $1000, which his parents matched.

Last Saturday, March 20, a concert to raise funds for the FIDF was held at the Addison-Penzak JCC Silicon Valley in Los Gatos.  The event was a success, raising over $700.   We take our hats
off to Tal Arad, a high school student and BBYO member, who chose to organize a  fundraising concert as her mitzvah project  in support
of the FIDF.

Two former IDF soldiers shared with the audience their thanks for the great support they received from the FIDF while they served in the Israeli army.   The audience remained attentive during their presentation;  when the band started playing, however,  people stood up and, led by several rambunctious high school students, started dancing around the room.

FIDF speakers enlighten and inspire members of the Jewish Women's Circle

Participants were riveted by the presentation about the FIDF programs and projects, and moved by the soldiers' personal stories shared February 24 at a member's Hillsborough home at their monthly meeting of the Jewish  Women's Circle.

After the presentation, members of the Circle assembled toiletry kits for the young Bay Area
women and men who have enlisted in the IDF and will be leaving for Israel in the summer.
