A LETTER FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Dear Friends and Supporters,
First of all, let me say: Thank you. Thank you for your tireless support of unprepared and unsupported parentless youth in our community. As we partner with you to prepare older youth for self sufficient living, I want you to know, that your commitment does not go unnoticed.
It is partly because of the busy lives we all lead that I am writing. As you know, NYEP generally funds its services through resident fees, insurance reimbursements, community foundation grants and individual donations: housing, food, clothing, life skills training and daily positive adult interaction. When discussing several alternative fundraising options at our recent board meeting, one person proposed that we simply write to friends/supporters and let them know the amount of our budget shortfall.
We could ask each community member to contribute a little
bit towards that amount, so that we can continue to offer our high quality residential based programming.
And that brings me to you. I wish I could tell you that we are raising money for a new program, or a special event. The reality is that we are raising money to simply continue the great program we have been able to offer in the past: the all inclusive Community Living Program.
And partly out of consideration for you, one of our esteemed friends, and your valuable time, we have decided to ask if each supporter could contribute $25 over the course of the next 4 months to help make up for where the budget has fallen short.
Like I said, we've considered many options, but in the end, we felt that the friends/supporters of NYEP have all given so much of their time already, the easiest and most convenient way to raise the needed money would be to just lay it at the community's feet and ask if we can all work together to share this burden.
"Many hands make light work," so the saying goes. If each friend of NYEP can give an extra $100, we will have enough for the Community Living Program to carry on through the year.
I want to end this letter by thanking you again. Thank you for taking the time to read it, and whether you are able to give or not, know we deeply appreciate your dedication to local youth.
Sincerely,
Monica DuPea
Executive Director

OUR CHALLENGE TO YOU IS TO CHALLENGE US September was an exciting month as we celebrated our fourth anniversary. When we look back on the last four years, we can't help but to think about our journey. Like the youth we serve we have also grown over the year. That got us thinking about our successes and failures and the importance of learning what about our program is working and what is not. Who better to measure our success rate than you? We value your insight and would like to see how you think that we are doing. We challenge you to challenge us, measure our success rate. Here are some tips to get you started. This is just a guideline, all feedback is greatly appreciated. 1. Set NYEP apart. Determine what makes NYEP different than others that do the same sort of work. Read up on our program by reviewing our website, perusing newspaper articles and talking to people who used our services. 2. Make a list of our program's traits on a paper or spreadsheet. List how you think the program best benefits youth and our community. List areas where you think we could expand. Use side-by-side columns to compare those traits with those of similar programs. A good method is to continually question what the program adds to what youth are getting elsewhere. 3. Make a list of what matters most. Read our program's mission statements and establish benchmarks that judge how well that mission statement is followed. Think about how youth development factors into education, crime and the economy. Set reasonable expectations on what youth should be getting out of the program. 4.Find the budget. Our annual budget is available on our website or call and request a copy. 5. Examine the numbers. Look at staffing costs compared to program costs. 6. Compute a cost ratio. Divide the total budget by the number of kids in the program. Divide that number of days or hours the program is in service. The goal is to say how much the organization spends on each youth. Breaking it down to time intervals also will give perspective on how much each dollar is worth to the program. 7. Compare our costs to other organizations. A good way to do this is to compare overall budgets, then factor in how many youth are served by the other programs. 8. Look for success stories. Attend the next board of directors meeting or read our organization's annual review. Ask for at least one concrete example of youth who have been put on track for a better future because of the youth program. We love bragging about our residents!!! 9. Find greater context for our organization's work. Call the county's criminal court clerk to ask for the annual juvenile case load for the past five years. Look for graduation rate data from the state department of education. 10. Put your thoughts on paper. Write a report listing all positive and negative points of our program. 11. Send your report to monica.nyep@gmail.com or call us to talk about your findings!!! We hope to hear from you soon. We are always looking to learn and grow as an organization. Your support and insight will help us offer our residents the best quality program possible!! Please feel free to ask us about how you can get involved. As a community we together can support parentless and unsupported youth. Without you our mission is not possible. Thank you!! |
GET TO KNOW OUR STAFF
Dr. Bob Quilitch, Clinical Supervisor
1. Tell us a little bit about yourself: Born in Long Beach, California, raised near Washington, DC, Florida, Virginia and Knoxville, Tennessee. I developed a real yen to see Alaska while I was a high school student and put myself through Mexico City College by working in a gold mine, putting out forest fires, cooking on a mail boat and working as an Assistant Engineer and disc jockey at KFAR Radio and TV in Fairbanks. I came out West after earning my PhD in Developmental and Child Psychology from the University of Kansas. I have always had a passion for teaching family life education, family meetings and cooperative games to children. The rest of my family (brother, sister and two nieces) all live in Denver. I could live happily in Denver or Portland. But, now I'm used to my "Reno Rut". I love train travel and want to go to Europe to zip across the French countryside at 150 mph.
2. What do you do at NYEP?
I help Monica and Jeanine keep their eyes on the ball and noses to the grindstone. We have developed some wonderful goals for our young women clients and we teach them the success skills they will need to make it in the world. We want them to have happy lives, now and in the future.
3. What do you like about working at NYEP?
I like seeing the progress we all make by working together at our Problem Solving Groups and Staff Development meetings. We take care of business and have a good time doing it.
4. What is the best advice that you have ever given and received?
To parents: raise you children so they will be successful and happy today and will be your friends after they leave home.
5. If you could give the world one piece of advice what would it be?
Plan as though you will live forever and live as though you will die tonight.

1. Tell us a little bit about yourself: I am 18 years old. I am from Orville, Ca born July 8, 1993. I am a very fun person, I plan on going to college to become a CI Social Worker. I am also President of the Local Youth Advisory Board for Washoe County (WAYCLIP), I am Secretary for the State Board.
2.Why are you at NYEP?
I am at NYEP because I aged out of foster care and was not ready to be on my own, so I was accepted here.
3. What do you like about living at NYEP?
I like that I am getting help with things that I actually need help with and that I can trust every person that is at NYEP to help us. I love MMA with Vernon White. I have learned a lot.
4. What is the best advice that you have ever given and received?
Some advice that I have given is, "the only thing you have to fear is fear itself." I say that because being afraid of doing something is hurting you because it could have been worth while.
5. If you could give the world one piece of advice what would it be?
The only thing you have to fear is fear itself and always believe in yourself no matter what.
