Cash Cow
|
We had one big CA$H COW winner in September! Congrats to Kim Groninga of Cedar Falls, who won $100 by finding a lucky jug.
In October, we will mark 7 jugs with $100 each (look inside the jug at your label when it's empty). Since we mark them at the beginning of the month, your best chance to find a large prize is in the next few days!
Remember, there are still 10 jugs EVERY WEEK marked with a $5.00 prize. View details here on our website.
There were several $5 winners this month: Katie Hogendorn; Mary Delagardelle of La Porte City; Leslie Cohn of Cedar Falls; Mark Wall of Waterloo; Laura Bean of Reinbeck; and a Cedar Falls customer.

Cow of the Month
| October's Cow of the Month is Louie. She was born Jan. 14, 2009, and has had one heifer and one bull in her career. She produced 32,400 pounds (3,767 gallons) of milk in her first year.
Louie is big but has strong feet and legs so she carries the weight well. This gentle giant loves human attention - one swipe down her forehead and she will be your BFF. Louie is a Holstein but has a coat of three colors, due to carrying two different genes: Black/Red and Red. She also carries the polled gene, which means her calves could be born without horns. |

You've met the Hansens, now meet the rest of the crew! Now that we've featured the Hansen family members who are involved in the business, it's time for you to get to know the other employees who make things tick every day. This month we meet Eric Cornish, manager at the Cedar Falls Outlet. Birthday and Age: 11/4/1969, 42 and 11/12's Family and life: Married to Disa; daughter Sophia (11) and son Elias (3). In my free time I like to spend time with my kids, cage-match frenzied packs of wild dingos, and fingerpaint. Favorite ice cream flavor: Mint chocolate chip
Role at Hansen's Dairy: I manage the Cedar Falls Outlet, and it is genuinely fun. Bringing in new products, expanding our selection, and sharing this with customers is my favorite part of the job.
What is a typical day like? Selling a lot of milk and I seem to be on the phone a lot, too.

Duck, Duck ... Turkey!
Our local farmers are raising ducks and turkeys that will be available for purchase this fall at the Cedar Falls Outlet and Waterloo Moo Roo. We'll have poultry from Groothuis, Genuine Faux Farm, and another exciting option we'll announce next month. This month we're highlighting the Muscovy ducks raised by Rob and Tammy Faux of Genuine Faux Farm in Tripoli. Here's what Rob told us about their ducks:
Muscovy are preferred by many chefs due to the low fat content and excellent flavor. In fact, Muscovy ducks have less fat content than Peking duck, turkey, lamb, beef and pork. These ducks also have higher protein levels than other ducks, lamb, beef and pork. Muscovys have an average of 50% more breast meat than other ducks. Our birds are raised humanely. In addition to foraging, these birds are provided with a feed mix with organic grains by Frantzen Farms in New Hampton. The birds love to dunk their head in water and have very sharp claws on their feet that make catching them a challenge. The drakes (males) are usually about twice the size of the hens (females) at maturity. We have hens that average 4.5 pounds and drakes that average 8.5 pounds. These are available to all who are interested. You may reserve a bird and indicate whether you would prefer a hen or a drake.

Customer of the Month
Our customer of the Month for October is Mary Jo Mallon of Janesville!
Favorite Hansen's product: "Milk and butter."
Why do you shop at Hansen's? "I buy because it is local and it tastes better."
Thanks Mary Jo!
We choose a new customer of the month from each month's entries - go ahead a submit one every month (or every week!) if you think of a new favorite product or reason to shop local at Hansen's.

As American as apple pie? Especially when you're using the same recipe as the White House pastry chef!
Hint: Apple pie + sharp cheddar cheese = amazing.
Also: Grilled apple slices + drizzle of maple syrup = truly delicious dessert
