Cow of the Month
|
June's Cow of the Month is Duke. She will turn 8 years old on Oct. 24. She has had five calves in her lifetime - unfortunately, they've all been bulls. Despite that, she is a great cow to have around.
Duke is a poster child for excellent feet, legs and udder, which are some of the traits that farmers look for in dairy cows. She is a quiet cow who minds her own business. Duke has produced nearly 130,000 pounds of milk in her lifetime. What a hard worker!
She is now pregnant and due with her sixth calf in December. We'll see if it's a heifer this time!

| We are extending the deadline for the 2012 Summer Recipe Compilation! Please submit your favorite recipes for summer barbecues, picnics, and potlucks. The only rule is that all recipes must feature at least one ingredient that can be purchased in a Hansen's retail store. Please e-mail your submissions to Disa Cornish at dlubker@gmail.com by June 27.

Remember, there are still 10 jugs EVERY WEEK marked with a $5.00 prize, so keep your eyes open! View details here on our website.
There were four $5 winners in May, all from Cedar Falls: Alice Gabel, Mark Berkley, Betsy Roling, and Linnea Ulrich.

Getting to know the Hansens
Each month we will feature one of the Hansen family members who make the business a success. This month we meet Blair Hansen, the third son of Jay and Jeanne Hansen. Birthday and Age: 12/10/77, 34 years old Favorite ice cream flavor: Black Raspberry Soft Serve
Role at Hansen's Dairy: Blair manages cow nutrition and feeding; hungry cows are sad cows so they love him! He doesn't just feed the cows, he grows and harvests their food in his crop management duties. Additionally, he is in charge of cow poop...that's right, his job is to pump 2 million gallons of poop each year to the fields as fertilizer. Blair is also the farm's resident handy-man, responsible for repairs and maintenance of machinery, buildings, dirt and anything else that needs creating or fixing.
What is a typical day like? Blair doesn't have a typical day beyond feeding the 300 animals each day; his job is dependent on the season and what is currently broken. In the summer and fall, he spends most of his time doing fieldwork. Winter and spring allow more time to fix broken tractors, silos, and the milking parlor.
Family and life:Blair and his wife Suzi have 3 children; Sam is sarcastic at 9 years old, Drew is a hilarious 7-year-old and Bridget is a sassy 4-going-on-16. He enjoys remodeling his house, playing and watching sports, and spending time with friends. He is currently a referee for his sons' soccer teams and has been picking up poop at home as well since he brought home a puppy this winter.

Welcome to our new intern!
We are very happy to welcome Christine Schick, our new summ er marketing intern! This internship is partially funded by Silos & Smokestacks. Christine agreed to tell us a bit about herself: "Hello Hansen Dairy community! My name is Christine Schick and I'm from the small town of Ridgeway, Iowa. I spent a lot of time on my grandparents' dairy farm growing up so I'm very excited to be working with the folks at Hansen's this summer. I am a senior at the University of Northern Iowa, with a double major in Public Relations and Political Communication. On campus I am involved in the student organization SAA (Student Admissions Ambassadors) and will be taking on the role of VP of public relations in the fall. I love spending time with family and friends and am eager to spend my summer at Hansen's."

Solar Splash
The Solar Splash is an annual event - the World Championship of Intercollegiate Solar/Electric Boating. From June 13 through June 17, this international competition will take place at George Wyth Lake in Waterloo. On Saturday the 16th, an endurance race will be held, and on the 17th are the final sprint heats and awards ceremony. Over the weekend, spectators will have a great view of the boats from the shore, a chance to talk to the teams, and look at the solar-powered boats. Plus, Hansen's will be there over the weekend, too - with ice cream sandwiches!

Tour center open house
On Saturday, June 30, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., we're hosting an open house at our newly opened tour center, 8461 Lincoln Road, next to the farm in Hudson.
The tour center and the attached home of Jay and Jeanne Hansen are both monolithic domes. This unique construction has lots of benefits and looks very interesting from a distance.
Come see the domes, enjoy some ice cream, and tour the farm. We look forward to seeing you there!

Cooking with Hansens
Kale is plentiful at the market by now. This salad is a really nice way to use it - sweet and salty all at once.
Raw Kale Salad
Ingredients 1 bunch kale 3/4 teaspoon coarse kosher salt or sea salt 1/4 cup finely diced red onion 1/2 cup dried cranberries/craisins 3/4 cup small-diced apple 1/3 cup sunflower seeds (or walnuts, pecans, or sliced almonds) 1/4 cup olive oil 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar 1/2 teaspoon sugar 1/3 cup crumbled blue cheese
Directions Wash the kale and pat it dry. Remove the tough stalks so just the leaves remain. Stack the kale leaves two or three at a time, roll them up, and slice the leaves into ribbons (1/4 to 1/2 inch).
Place the kale ribbons in a large mixing bowl. Sprinkle on the salt and massage it into the kale with your fingers for two minutes. You'll notice the kale start to turn a darker green and the texture of the kale will begin to soften a bit. Toss in the red onions, craisins, apples, and sunflower seeds. In a small bowl, whisk together the oil, vinegar and sugar. Pour over the salad and toss. Sprinkle cheese over the top and serve.
