Getting in the holiday spirit
|
|
Hansen's Egg Nog should be on the shelf at Moo Roo and the Outlet on Thursday, Nov. 4.
Candy Cane Ice Cream is now available in the dip cabinet at the Moo Roo as well as in half-gallons at both locations.
Looking for a unique, local gift idea? We make customizable cheese boxes that can be shipped. We also have popcorn, jams, Amish candies, soaps, and candles, which can be incorporated into the baskets. Jay Hansen is busy making caramels and cow chips, which seem to be very popular as well.
Cheese trays for your holiday parties are available with advance notice.
Delaware County Meats will have spiral hams available at our stores beginning Nov. 17. Individuals should make a special order to guarantee availability. Two sizes are available: 7-9 lbs and 14-18 lbs. They will sell for $3.49/lb.

Cheeses of the Month
|
|
Cedar Grove brand Havarti & Farmers Cheese
Havarti has a buttery, slightly acidic flavor. Its texture is smooth and supple with tiny holes. This award winner is great sliced on sandwiches, shredded in egg dishes or diced on salads.
Farmers cheese is soft fresh to semi-soft and is similar to Havarti, but lower in fat (less than 2%). The flavor is buttery and slightly acidic. Try this cheese shredded in potato dishes and casseroles, sliced on sandwiches or cubed for snacks.
THREE CHEESE BAKED
MACARONI & CHEESE
3 1/2 c. elbow macaroni or rotini
4 tbsp. butter
4 tbsp. flour
1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. pepper
3/4 tsp. dry mustard
3 1/2 c. milk
Tabasco sauce to taste
5 c. grated mixed cheddar, Jack, Havarti
3/4 c. dry bread crumbs
3 tbsp. butter
Cook macaroni in 5 quarts water for 5 minutes; drain.
In separate pan, melt butter, blend in flour, salt, pepper and mustard. Add milk and Tabasco; cool, stirring over moderate heat, until thick and smooth. Remove sauce from heat, add cheeses and stir until melted and blended. Combine with cooked macaroni, pour into baking dish and top with dry bread crumbs and 3 tablespoons butter. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.

Another good tour season
|
|
|
Thanks to all of you who have brought families, friends, and students to visit the Hansen Dairy Farm. It was a busy summer and we look forward to next spring. For those who were out to the farm, we are still waiting for our young joey to show his/her head from the wallaby pouch. See you in the spring!

Cow of the Month
|
|
Dabble
|
November's Cow of the Month is Dabble. She is special because she just gave birth to the 3,000th heifer calf born on the Hansen Dairy Farm since 1952. We named the calf Dribble.
Dabble is only 23 months old but has already been milking for 103 days. She is the highest milking 2-year-old on the farm, averaging about 105 pounds per day. Dabble has a tremendous amount of potential to be a high producing cow. Her mother, Dazzle, is still working on the farm at 9 1/2 years old. Dazzle has also given birth to six heifer calves in her lifetime, so hopefully Dabble continues with the same success!

Change in baked goods
|
|
Thank you, Ruth Beck, for providing Moo Roo with baked goods for the past 4 1/2 years. Ruth has decided to slow down a bit and will only be bringing in cookie dough, jams, and pigs in a blanket. Call her with special orders at 988-3729. We appreciate her contribution.
Beginning Wednesday, Nov. 3, we will have other fresh baked goods available. Different bakers with years of experience will be sharing their goods with us a few times a week, so give them a try and let us know what you think.
