June is Dairy Month
|
|
Dairy month originated in 1937, an annual
tradition to celebrate the dairy industry and its
many contributions to our society. It was
given a theme "Keep Youthful - Drink Milk" in
1937.
"June Dairy Month" became the official title in
1939, initially funded by a one cent per pound
butterfat assessment in June. " The
cooperation between the farmers and other
community members are really the basis of
what June Dairy Month is all about:
celebrating and using a wonderful product."

Cow of the Month
|
|
Diaz
June's Cow of the Month is Diaz. At 4 years
old, she's had 3 calves, all heifers. She is
pregnant again and is due Feb. 4, 2010. Diaz
was named after actress Cameron Diaz. She
may not be as famous as Cameron, but Cow
of the Month is a good start! Diaz, who has
milked 68,200 pounds in her lifetime, was the
highest producer on test day this month at
128 pounds. Diaz is very friendly and minds
her own business. If you would visit her in the
barn, she would probably be eating. She likes
to eat -- well over 50 pounds of feed a day
and over 40 gallons of water -- but milks off
everything she eats. Way to go, Diaz!

Fresh Strawberries
|
|
Coming Soon!
Bagge's Strawberries from Independence hope
to have their strawberries ready by June 12th.
They will be available the Moo Roo and the
Outlet. Be sure to watch for the announcement.
The garden greens from Steve & Jean
Moseley's Rosehill Farms, Hudson, were
well received. They will be bringing in
cucumbers as they are available. They are
raised in a greenhouse, European style, have
a thin skin and a mild taste. Look for other
produce such as cherry and grape tomatoes,
as it becomes available in both stores.
