HAPPY 70TH ANNIVERSARY TO HILLCREST

by Richelle Wingo

Today is the official 70th anniversary of Hillcrest Children's Home.  A dream that was started in the heart of one young lady has carried over for the past 70 years, and has been home to over 4,000 children across America and continues to serve children today.

Gladys Hinson, an Arkansas native, had a strong desire to begin a children's home in the country of China after reading about all of the work being done in Egypt through Lillian Trasher.  When Pearl Harbor was attacked, all passports for missionaries were called in and Gladys was denied the opportunity to go to China but the Lord revealed to her that she could do something in America.  She immediately began the communication to start a home and chose a beautiful property in Hot Springs, AR.  After multiple meetings, the property was purchased by the Assemblies of God and on September 22, 1944, Gladys and 3 young boys moved into the home. Within 3 months, the home grew to include 17 children.

Originally the home was called, The National Children's Home and was changed to Hillcrest Children's home in the 60's.  The mission in her heart 70 years ago is still the same today, caring for fragmented and fatherless children.  Through the years, the home has grown, expanded and developed into a 65 acre property that includes the ministries of Hillcrest Children's Home, Highlands Maternity Home, Transitional Living Center, adoption services and in other foster care ministries.
