BECOMING AN ENERGY STAR
Smart Maintenance work stream completes two assessments

Becoming an Energy Star means changing how we work to do things in the most efficient way possible. The goal of the Smart Maintenance work stream is to help all of our businesses reduce maintenance time and ensure maintenance activities are conducted at the right time. To support that goal, the work stream created a Playbook, processes and tools for use in conducting maintenance assessments of our assets globally. The playbook features procedures for unit selection, data gathering, planning, on-site assessment procedures and decision making process.
OUR PEOPLE, OUR ENERGY
DP&L helps restore power after major storm in the United States

A major hurricane named Matthew hit the southeastern coast of the United States last week. At the storm's peak, roughly 23,000 people were without access to power.

DP&L sent 120 people and crew members to Florida to help restore power to the impacted areas. Our relief efforts are part of a mutual aid agreement we entered into with several utilities to assist in bringing electricity back to customers following severe weather conditions such as tornadoes, hurricanes or winter storms. The same agreement enables DP&L to request help from other utilities when severe weather impacts our ability to serve our customers in Ohio.

As of October 11, crews and contractors from DP&L were still working to restore power in Florida and Georgia. Thank you to our team in DP&L for helping bring power to those who need it most!
BEHIND THE MW
AES starts Coal Mitigation Initiative

AES recently launched the Coal Mitigation Initiative as part of our AES Global Insurance Company (AGIC) Risk Engineering program. One of the goals of the Risk Engineering program is to assist our businesses in developing a comprehensive Combustible Dust program that integrates all of the elements that affect compliance with industry safety, insurance guidelines taking into consideration the plants budgetary constraints.

Coal dust can present significant safety risks to our people and property loss risk due to the potential for fire and explosions. Depending on the level coal dust buildup, this risk can lead to significant property damage, business interruption, or personnel injury or loss of life.

ALWAYS ON FOR SAFETY
AES Safety and Environmental System Upgrade

We're making changes to AESOnline, our global environmental, safety and audit data collection and reporting system, aimed at improving the gathering, facilitation and interpretation of data input and output. Two of the new additions to AESOnline are the Safety Walk Application for computers and mobile devices, and the AES Safety and Environmental dashboard.

The Safety Walk Application will help improve the quality of our individual Safety Walks and our Safety Walk programs across our businesses. The application has the capability to understand trends, findings and observations and share them among AES people. Starting in January, the AESOnline Safety Walk application will become the common tool for all operating businesses at AES to record and track Safety Walks.
ALWAYS ON FOR SAFETY
Jason Channell is Always On for Safety

Jason is a Technician Safety Coordinator at Laurel Mountain, an AES wind facility in West Virginia, part of the US SBU. Jason believes that being Always On for Safety means consistently having a safe state of mind by taking care of yourself, your colleagues and contractors. "There's no difference between looking out for contractors or peers, it's all the same. We are always on for safety. We are always looking to help keep everyone safe whether it's on or off the job," explained Jason. He constantly uses this authority to stop unsafe work and his Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

Risks and hazards on the job must be mitigated in ways other than the PPE. "Using the right PPE is usually your last round of defense, but always using it properly and consistently is important," expressed Jason. He added that the Job Safety Analysis is a mindset that can help prevent incidents. "It channels your mind to be Always On for Safety; it makes your mind anticipate things that could happen."

Jason is an outstanding Safety Coordinator and Technician because he always puts safety first. He maintains the site safety programs and initiates the Internal Audit process. Jason also has played a role in helping other sites as a Safety Rover during outages. Thank you, Jason, for being Always On for Safety.
