LEADERSHIP MATTERS
Monthly Safety Message
from Ken Zagzebski

Safety is our first Value at AES. We hear this, read it and even say it, but what does safety being our first Value really mean? Values are something that must be internalized by everyone and provide the basis for our actions and decisions. When it comes to safety that means there is never an instance in which a job is so important that we choose to do something that is unsafe. We never compromise safety in an attempt to do our work faster or cheaper. The safety of the community, the people we work with and ourselves is in the forefront of our mind and the basis for the decisions we make.

For all AES people and our contractors, you are responsible for your own safety, the safety of your teammates and the people in the community in which you work. You are constantly aware of your surroundings and the potential risks - even as changes to the original plan occur. It is important to follow procedures. Approach each job as if it is the first time you are doing it. Be thoughtful in completing your Job Safety Analysis (JSA) and stay focused on your work. Speak up and use your Stop Work Authority when you see an unsafe condition or an unsafe behavior - it's one of the most important safety tools you have to prevent an incident from occurring.

BECOMING AN ENERGY STAR
Protecting AES in cyber space.  A look at the Cybersecurity efficiency work stream

One of the ways we will become an energy star by strengthening our current infrastructure to manage risks. The Cybersecurity Efficiency work stream ensures the safety of AES and its personnel by implementing standardized tools and unified processes to protect AES against cybersecurity attacks. Our projected savings of US $2M in our cybersecurity efforts will be reinvested into people, tools and global monitoring to continue protecting AES' infrastructure from current attack types and from new ones as they evolve.

The work stream looks at our internet architecture and how people access our network as well as the tools and services that people use to protect us from cyber threats globally. Through this work stream, we will come up with unified tools and systems that enhance efficiency and provide global visibility. One virtual global cyber team will be established that will work together to protect AES people, assets and information. In addition, this work stream allows us to leverage our global size to enter into contracts that will be beneficial to AES in terms of price and services.

BEHIND THE MW
AES El Salvador uses
solar energy to lower emissions and costs

AES El Salvador, part of the MCAC SBU, recently developed solar-roof construction projects in three of its facilities. Two of the facilities are carports projects installed at the central zone facility and the customer service center in the western part of the country. The third project includes buildings at our facilities in the eastern zone. Through these solar projects, AES El Salvador was able to increase energy efficiency in its facilities while gaining knowledge about the solar photovoltaic generation market in the country.  In addition, the project allowed AES El Salvador to familiarize itself with local suppliers, technologies and structural designs. The solar project generates 153 MWh of power overall, and has reduced CO2 emissions by 80 tons and lowered energy costs by US $21,000.

AES Tietê  Fishing Management program saves endangered marine species

AES Tietê, part of the Brazil SBU, recently saved the Piracanjuba fish {Brycon orbignyanus) from being an endangered species through its Fishing Management program.

The salmon-looking fish weighing up to 17 pounds or 8 kilos has a high commercial value and was declared an endangered species in Brazil 30 years ago. Through the program, we are slowly bringing back the species to its natural habitat. AES' Fishing Management environmental program aims to provide a conducive environment for six endangered native fish species to reproduce, while monitoring and actively managing the water quality in our reservoirs. Through this program, we are able to preserve the marine biodiversity of the communities and the areas where we serve which balances the ecosystem.

OUR PEOPLE, OUR ENERGY
AES Colón participates in Colón Regional
Science Fair

AES Colón, part of the MCAC SBU, participated in the VII Regional Science Fair of the Ministry of Education celebrated in the Province of Colón, Republic of Panamá. Entitled "In Colón we make science with passion", the event took place from August 17 through 19 and drew in 200 students in grades 1 through 12 from different schools. The fair showcased 65 projects in the fields of environment, chemistry, physics and biology.

AES Colón shared our work on the regions's first LNG power generation complex to be located in their own province of Colón. AES Colón leaders and managers also judged various projects, interacting with the students and evaluating their work. The company also sponsored the medals awarded to students with winning projects.

This initiative underscores the commitment AES and the project have to educating the Colón community and is just the beginning of our efforts. In cooperation with the Ministry of Education and local schools, we will continue to expand our education about LNG and energy generation.

ALWAYS ON FOR SAFETY
Eitel Figueroa is Always On for Safety

Eitel is a Coal Combustion Products Engineer at AES Puerto Rico, part of the MCAC SBU. He thinks that a safety hero is a person capable of identifying potential risks and using their stop work authority to prevent incidents. Eitel says that performing a high quality Job Safety Analysis (JSA) is vital to working safely. "Before starting work and getting a work permit, we do a JSA to list and identify the potential risks associated with the work we are about to start. This is where you take a detailed look at each step of the work. It is important not only to identify risks, but to eliminate them. If it is not possible to do so, risks must be mitigated," explained Eitel.

Two years ago, he was conducting a Safety Walk during an outage at the plant and found a contractor hooking a harness on a handrail. Eitel observed the unsafe behavior and stopped the work activity. When asked about his biggest challenge in becoming a safety hero, he said "One of the greatest challenges is to exercise Stop Work Authority or to conduct a quality Safety Walk without fear and regardless of who the person involved is, an AES person or contractor, a site manager or a person you don't know." When it comes to safety, he thinks there is no difference what our association or position is. We all should stop work whenever we observe an unsafe condition or behavior.

Thank you, Eitel, for using your stop work authority and for being Always on for Safety.
