Greetings!
Last week, we all stopped worked and took time to Stand Down for Safety. The Safety Stand Down reminded us how important it is for us to focus on safety, live our safety beliefs and follow proper procedures. The actions we take can make the difference if teammates go home safely to their families at the end of each work day or not. We are all responsible for each other when it comes to safety. During the Stand Down, we also had the opportunity to hear from our Safety Excellence Award winner, Butch Haganman, who shared his personal story how an incident changed his life. A message from COO Bernerd DaSantos:
AES Masinloc colleague Alfonso Salcedo passed away
Just last week, we stopped work across the company for safety because safety comes before everything that we do. We each had the opportunity to personally recommit to safety and what we can do to make our workplaces safer for everyone. Your personal commitment to safety is a commitment to your teammates to help keep them safe and to your family, friends and loved ones to return home to them at the end of your work day. It is extremely upsetting to have to report the tragic loss of another member of the AES family. A stark reminder of why our commitment to safety is so very important.
As I shared with you last month, an incident occurred on July 12 during the repair of a high pressure heater at our Masinloc plant in the Philippines, part of the Asia SBU. Six individuals, including five AES people and one contractor, were injured in the incident. On July 16, Cesar Villalon one of the AES people with steam burns covering 90 percent of his body passed away early in the morning. Another AES person, Alfonso Salcedo, with steam burns covering 72 percent of his body had been fighting for his life in the intensive care unit of the hospital since the incident. I am deeply saddened to let you know that Alfonso lost his courageous fight on August 14. The loss of Alfonso marks the second AES person fatality as a result of this incident.
